I write today to let you know that at the end of June (June 30 to be exact), A Cook's Café will close.
It has been my privilege beyond words to have been able to bring a locally focused, community-based business to Annapolis over the last 15+ years. We have accomplished a lot. We were the first in this area to concentrate on sourcing our foods within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, bringing increased economic activity to the area, and as a direct consequence, supplying you with healthy and fresh lunches and dinners. We hosted cooking classes to help you increase your recipe repertoire, enhance your cooking skills, and have fun all at the same time. Home kitchens are the heart of the home, and hopefully we have encouraged you to gather there more often and do great things with family and friends. We have provided many of you with products directly from local farms through the Market Basket program and the CSA. We survived during a very difficult recession. Former Governor O'Malley recognized our contribution in a special Governor's award for supporting local agriculture in 2011. As I said, we have done a lot.
I am deeply grateful to all of you that have supported us over the years. I will miss you.
Most of you know that I have been attempting to find a buyer for the Cafe for over a year, and while I have talked with a number of good people, none had that glint in the eye that I had over 15 years ago to start a small business totally dedicated to serving and enhancing the locality of the place we live, taking the risk and working the long hours that a locally owned, independent business requires. Not being able to find that buyer to continue this mission, at some point, one must draw a line in the sand. I did and hence, I made the decision to close.
Next week's Market Basket delivery (June 22) will be our last local foods from our farms to you delivery so stock up if you wish (Orders in by Monday, order form out later today). The final take home dinners will be next Tuesday (June 20) and Thursday (June 22). We will do a couple of our most popular menus. Look for a very special cooking class on Saturday, June 24.
I look forward to seeing you over the next two weeks to thank you for all that you have done for the Café and the community we support.
As for me, I have no firm plans as yet, but look forward to the next challenges staying close to my beliefs that my primary obligations are to family and community. Those are the things I love.
I have cherished this time with you.
