Carvins Cove Hollins Helps Build Greenway

"Hollins has worked closely with Roanoke County and interested citizens to establish a portion of the Tinker Creek Greenway trail that runs three-quarters of a mile from Plantation Road across university property and ultimately connects with Carvins Cove," explains President Nancy Gray. "Part of our commitment to this important project is to assist with clearing and building the two-foot-wide walking path. We've designated April 6 and 7 as 'Hollins Community Work Days' to complete this work."

Campus news


The basketball team finished the season with a 10-15 record, the second best overall record in Hollins basketball history. The team also finished 8-12 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, which ties the best ODAC record in school history. Season highlights: two wins over Washington and Lee as well as a 74-66 upset of defending ODAC tournament champions, Randolph Macon.


The Athletic Events Coordinator of the Hollins Activity Board, Megan Brown '13, is leading a Hollins team for the Histio-Hike Shenandoah in memory of her older brother. Join or support her team at this hike in the Shenandoah National Park on April 28, to support awareness and research programs into treatments for children and adults affected by the histiocytic disorders. Beach clean upDuring their January Short Term course, "The Caribbean: Biodiversity, Cultural History, and Environmental Issues," 12 students and two faculty members undertook a beach clean-up project while on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. They cleaned up four shorelines, removing a total of 5,787 items weighing over 125 pounds.

Sophomore Kindra Wyatt has been named the winner of a $10,000 award from the Fund for Education Abroad's Hiliary Echo Douglas Memorial Scholarship to study in India during the 2012-2013 academic year. Wyatt, who resides in Salem, Virginia, is among just 11 students selected from a pool of 224 applicants representing over 190 U. S. colleges and universities to receive an award, and is the only student to receive $10,000, the highest award given.

Smith and McCorkleSpecial Event with Lee Smith '67 and Jill McCorkle M.A. '81

If you're in the Roanoke area, or close enough for a road trip, you don't want to miss this special event. On Friday, April 20, alumnae and friends are invited to a special reception with Lee Smith and Jill McCorkle, authors of the musical Good Ol' Girls, followed by a performance of the show at the Hollins theatre that evening.

ComptonABC News White House Correspondent Ann Compton '69 has been inducted into the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association's Hall of Fame. Her internship as a Hollins student started her on her career path.

Mark your calendar for November 8-11, 2012, for our annual weekend for 1842 Society and Miss Matty's Circle donors, this year in Atlanta. Special events include a High Museum of Art reception and the opportunity to view an exhibition of work by artist and alumna Susan Seydel Cofer '64.

Important Stock Transfer Change

Hollins' fiscal year ends on June 30, and we have important information regarding gifts of securities (stocks and bonds). In May 2012, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney will upgrade its computer system, necessitating a change to Hollins' customer account number. You will need this new customer account number along with the DTC transfer number in order to facilitate an electronic transfer of stock to Hollins. Please visit www.hollins.edu/giving in May for the new account number.
