Responding to Crisis
Fortunately, the emergency incident on the first day of classes this semester was quickly resolved. But it serves as a reminder that things do not always go according to plan and that teachers may be sometimes thrust into the role of emergency coordinator and counselor. In times of crisis and tragedy, students want to hear from you . It may suffice simply to acknowledge a tragedy with a moment of silence. Or you may want to go deeper. Two key points:
  • Set ground rules of respect and empathy for discussion.
  • Be flexible and willing to add or cut readings or content and extend deadlines if necessary.
