Tips for Taking Road Trips with Your Pets

The weather is getting warmer and summer is swiftly approaching. And with that, we begin dreaming about our summer vacations and road trips. On these trips, we want to include our furry family members, but sometimes traveling with a pet is difficult. Have no fear! We have tips and tricks to traveling safely and effectively with your pets in the car!
  • Dogs should never be loose to roam the car. Not only is this dangerous for them because they are not restrained in the event of an accident, but it is dangerous for the driver as well because a lose dog can pose as a distraction. Dogs should always be in an anchored crate or harnessed with a doggie seat belt.
  • Keep cats in carriers. Cats do not typically travel well in cars, so the best option to reduce stress and potential harm is for them to travel at all times in a harnessed carrier.
  • Back seats only! Airbags are designed to defend humans against the effects of an accident, and can cause harm or damage even when they are deployed properly. For pets, airbags can cause serious harm, or even death. So keep Kitty and Fido in the back seat.
  • Keep those heads inside. Open windows pose limitless safety concerns for a pet. When they stick their heads out of the windows of a moving car, they could be at risk of falling out or being hit with debris. They can even get sick from cold air being forced into their lungs. And NEVER transport pets in the back of a pickup truck!
  • Rest stops. Always be sure to stop and give your pets plenty of rest breaks and opportunity to stretch their legs. However, never let your pet leave the car without a collar, ID tag, and leash.
  • Use the buddy system. If it is possible for you to travel with a human buddy, do so. Having another person with you to help manage the pets will take the stress and pressure off of you. Not only that, but you will be able to take breaks and use the restrooms at stops.
  • Never leave your pet alone in the car. A quick 5-minute pit stop might not feel like a long time to you, but it can be a long time to your pet. Heat is always an issue in the car, as cars will get very hot very quickly. You also open yourself and your pet to the risk of car and/or pet thieves. So be sure to stay with you beloved pet at all times.
