The year's sexiest show was also one of its smartest. In the gallery's main space, Tom's meticulously refined drawings-as elegant as they are erotic-were installed in a series of parallel corridors, offering viewers a series of intimate encounters with the works and engendering an excitement not unlike that of cruising.

Tom of Finland's work is taught in figurative drawing classes in art schools - a sure sign of his quasi-canonization. Having passed through an era period where he was regarded as a pornographer to one where he was pigeonholed as a niche commercial illustrator, he's now acknowledged as one of the five most influential artists of the last century - at least according to the words of philanthropist and arts trustee Harvey S. Shipley Miller.

In 1984, Durk Dehner decided the time had come to focus on his goal, an altruistic one. He wanted to start a nonprofit Tom of Finland organization, one which would be free of commercial aspects and able to concentrate on preserving Tom's art and enhancing his reputation.
