Sports Quote of the Day

On This Day In History

Ted Williams homers in four decades

On this day in 1960, Ted Williams becomes the first major leaguer to homer in four different decades when he blasts a pitch from Senators' right-hander Camilo Pascual 500 feet over the center field wall for the only run in the Red Sox's 10-1 Opening Day loss at Griffith Stadium. In 1939, the then 20 year-old 'Kid' hit the first of his 521 career round-trippers, a first-inning two-run shot off Philadelphia's Bud Thomas at Fenway Park.

One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed Little Johnny was staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. The seven-year- old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the boy, and said quietly, "Good morning, son."

"Good morning pastor" replied the young man, focused on the plaque.

"Sir, what is this?" Little Johnny asked.

"Well son, these are all the people who have died in the service," replied the pastor.

Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque.

Little Johnny's voice barely broke the silence when he asked quietly, "Which one, sir, the 8:30 or the 10:30 service?"

I have been a Buchholz fan right from the start and his ups and downs are so drastic that I'm concerned. It almost seems that he has that J.D. Drew attitude, oh well, maybe next time. Don't get me wrong, I'm still pulling for him, but it is getting harder. I really want him to do well and will stand behind him as long as he is on this team.

By the way, has anybody seen what Iggy is doing in Detroit? Now that he's over his ankle problems he is hitting and still playing a great SS.   Go Sox!

Wow...Clay Buchholz is sorry?  As a senior member of the Red Sox rotation, he's contrite and even embarrassed that he became emotionally unglued by the beating he took at Yankee Stadium last weekend.  He's got no excuse for it.  He was pissed off and things were happening too quickly.  On top of that, he told the staff it wouldn't happen again.  I'm just taking quotes from the recent Herald article but, come on!  Does anyone believe that this guy can come back and be a true ace and #1 starter?  I'm trying to stay positive but as each outing goes by, I'm less and less confident about his abilities.  At this point in his career, he ought to be able to hold it together and pitch a good game consistently.  That is the key!  True test of time will be this season but I have a feeling that we'll be looking elsewhere (hopefully) for another starter if this continues.

I know the season is very young but I do not think we will make it into the Post Season because of pitching. Clay Buchholz is not a starter and Edward Mujica should not even be in the Majors. Mujica blows more games than I like to think about and when he is called in, I yell at the skipper from my chair and at the TV.  As for Buch, he shows no emotion when he has allowed run after run. Yes I know that a person needs to keep his emotions in check during the game and make themselves feel like they can pull it out. If something is not done about our SPs, we will be done. We can not put the pressure on the bats for every game and we all know a lot of games the score is very low.  The reality is the bats will not save us like they have so far. We need to get some good pitchers because we have huge holes in the pitching corps. If we can only get one or two good pitchers, I fell we can take it all the way.

I agree with Ryan on Buchholz. He wasn't good at all against NYY, and honestly, I'm loosing faith in him. He's proven to us before that he can be an awesome pitcher, but as of the past season or so, he's been loosing his passion. Or so it seems. I really like the look of this team. We have great players, but Buchholz needs to remember that he's now one of the "old guys" on the team, and act like he cares. It doesn't seem like he does anymore. He's not the same guy we saw pitch in 2013 when he was on fire. He needs that fire back.

Looking forward to going to Sunday's (4/19) game!! Hoping for a win from our Red Sox!! I believe Porcello is pitching, so it'll be fun.

Have a good weekend Red Sox Nation!!
