Update regarding today's
Fulton County Board of Assessors meeting and next steps
Dear Milton Residents:

As you may know, City Manager Steve Krokoff and I traveled downtown today to attend the Fulton County Board of Assessors (BOA) meeting. The Fulton County Government Assembly Hall was packed with residents from across Fulton County, and the meeting that started at 12:30 p.m. didn't end until 4:00 p.m. and included extended public comment time. Numerous city, county and state officials, including myself, stood before the BOA to ask them to simply do the right thing.

By now, you may have already heard that they did not do the right thing--the BOA did not vote in favor of rescinding the 2017 property tax assessments, stating that they " do not have the legal authority to rescind assessments." While this is certainly not the answer we all hoped for, I can assure you that our efforts do not end with today's BOA vote.

We've already heard from so many of our Milton residents regarding the negative financial impact this has on your family, the fear of our senior residents who want to remain in their homes, the questionable appraisal amounts, inaccurate application of homestead exemptions, and the list goes on. We were further committed to our efforts after hearing from Fulton County residents who detailed their personal circumstances during the public comment portion of today's meeting.

We're just a few hours on the other side of the vote; however, our proactive efforts to seek relief for our residents continues. City officials will be reaching out to our colleagues at the county and state level to further evaluate possible short-term answers and more permanent long-term solutions that help ensure we never find ourselves in this predicament again.

This situation is unprecedented and will require all of us working together for a solution.

While we continue our work on this end, I want to strongly encourage our residents who believe their assessment is inaccurate to submit their appeal online or by mail before the July 10 deadline. It's important that our residents document the inaccuracies through the appeals process. Based on today's report to the board by the chief appraiser, his staff is tracking the total appeals, board members are inquiring about those totals, and we need for our affected residents to be accounted for in the process.

As always, we will continue to provide the community updates as new information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Joe Lockwood, Mayor
