In the 1990 film Home Alone , the McCallister family plans a trip abroad for the Christmas holidays. They accidentally oversleep the morning of their flight and find themselves in a mad rush to make it to the airport on time. Fortunately, they catch their flight, and all seems to be going well. But Mrs. McCallister has a nagging feeling that she forgot something important. It's not until they are halfway across the Atlantic Ocean that she suddenly realizes she did leave something behind----her eight-year-old son, Kevin. Upon landing in Paris, she frantically attempts to get back to Kevin, and finally reaches him on Christmas morning. Though Kevin did endure some antics while home alone, his mother finds him doing just fine. He's happy to see her, and he's even gone grocery shopping. Kevin has grown.

Similarly, after realizing Jesus is still in Jerusalem, Mary and Joseph search for him and find him in the temple, learning and growing. While they are frustrated that he ran off, Jesus basically says, "It's cool, you guys. I was with Dad."

Sometimes, God requires us to stay behind. While we may have the best laid plans, those unexpected bumps in the road might actually be God saying, "Be still for a while and let's get some work done." He does it so we can grow into the people he wants us to be. So, at times, God may need us to stay behind, but we are never left behind. It's cool. We're with "Dad."
