Statement from County Executive Astorino on today's New York Times:

'Opt-Out Becomes Anti-Test Rallying Cry'

May 21, 2015

"Today's New York Times piece, entitled 'Opt-Out Becomes Anti-Test Rallying Cry' misses the mark on the genesis of the stop-Common Core movement that has grown organically throughout this state and others. Parents like my wife and I didn't opt our children out because we are against tests, but because we oppose this particular set of standards. They are an unvetted experiment on our children. Our concerns are just: the two content experts on the validation committee said the standards are poor. Bill Gates, who spent $200 million creating Common Core, sends his children to a school not aligned to its standards, and the list goes on. Simply put, we are not opposed to the tests because they're hard, we're opposed because they could very well be of poor quality, and even harmful for our kids.

"The efforts of Common Core proponents to misrepresent these concerns, coupled with Albany's refusal to acknowledge them, has led to this explosive activism. This movement will only grow stronger as long as they continue to do so."
