Dear Neighbors

The long spell without rain continued through the holidays.  It's hard to wish for much needed rain when the weather has been so beautiful the way it is.  

2018 is here and burn permits are available at the Montezuma Rimrock Fire Station unless the crew is out on a call.  (There is no longer admin staff at the station).  The permits are free and burning is allowed from March 1 through May 31 and August 1 through November 30, 2018.

January has again brought us bowhunters shooting deer within our community.  This is unfortunately legal unless you have posted your property NO HUNTING.  The Beaver Creek Community Association will purchase and deliver signs to you if no one at your residence has time to get them.  We did this last year as we have done in previous years.  The open spaces near riparian areas and game trails are a particular problem.  The owners of those properties need to be contacted for permission to post.  If you are having difficulty finding the names of the owners, please contact Janet at 301-2749 who can often help with that.

This evening the Drumming Circle meets at the Adult Center and tomorrow the Silver Circle Women's Group meets there.  On Saturday the bird walk will start at the Montezuma Well picnic area and the historic rock school is open at Beaver Creek School.  The holiday art exhibit at the Beaver Creek Library runs through Saturday.  Information is included below on the Day of Service at Montezuma Well to be held on MLK Day since there is a registration deadline of January 11.  All the information is below.

­Wednesday, 1/3-The Wapiti Drumming Circle meets at 5:30 PM in the Beaver Creek Adult Center, 4250 E Zuni Way in the Lake Montezuma Village Square directly across from Cricket's Restaurant.  ­­The circle will include an initial sage smudge, blessing of drums with tobacco, and an opening, centering prayer. Following the beating of the seven directions there will be a brief gratitude meditation.  The evening's drumming will conclude by drumming west, north, east, south, sky and earth. (See flyer below)
 
Thursday, 1/4--The Silver Circle Women's Group weekly for a short uplifting lesson and circle sharing from 6 to 8 PM in the Beaver Creek Adult Center. Our purpose is to honor, appreciate and celebrate this important phase of womanhood.  Please phone928-593-9528 for further information.
 
Saturdays, 1/6--Bird Walks at Montezuma Well  will be hosted by NPS from 9 AM to 11 AM the first and third Saturdays through April.  Meet at the Montezuma Well picnic area.  For more information please contact NPS at 928-567-3322, ext 0.
 
Saturdays, 1/6-The Historic Beaver Creek Rock School Building is open to the public from 10 AM to 1 PM.  Docents from the Beaver Creek Preservation & Historical Society will be on hand to answer questions.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MLK DAY OF SERVICE AT MONTEZUMA WELL

Join park rangers at Montezuma Well on Monday, January 15th from 10am - 3pm for Martin Luther King Day.  To honor Dr. King, many organizations around the country are offering opportunities to serve others. 
Rangers at Montezuma Well need help with:
  • Weeding & tilling the traditional use & pollinator gardens
  • Creating native seeds balls
  • Cleaning out irrigation ditches
  • Removing invasive plants (like pesky Johnson grass and Russian thistle)
  • Trail maintenance (raking mulch, clearing debris, trimming branches)
Participants will also learn about native plants and their cultural uses. 
We will provide extra water and tools, but please bring a water bottle, wear sturdy shoes, work clothes, a hat, and gloves if you have them.  We will be offering free lunch!

th.
