Our Health Partner

Five Reasons Back-To-School Health Exams Are Important

Back-to-school means new clothes and shoes, new schedules and...new health exams? It does if you want to make sure your children stay healthy and are ready for the transition back into the school year.

It is truly inspiring when the community works together to improve life for all. Later this month the local United Way campaign will launch asking us to join together to support Bold Goals for youth to succeed, encourage better community and individual health, and build economic self sufficiency. The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati is proud to partner with United Way in several ways. The United Way supports the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program helping adults reverse the trends that can lead to challenges associated with that chronic disease.

A significant part of the Y's annual United Way support enrolls low-income children in the Y's star-rated early learning centers and afterschool programs throughout the region. Not only are these programs critical for children to stay on track for learning, they also provide support for all dimensions of their development.

The Y's recent data report to United Way shows:

  • 90% of the Y's early education children are ready when entering kindergarten

In the Y's afterschool programs:

  • 94% of the YMCA afterschool children demonstrate the social and emotional skills needed for success in school and life

  • 98% complete their homework

  • 100% of the children in the Y's programs participate in regular physical activity

The second way the Y partners with United Way is through our YMCA staff United Way campaign.  The high percentage of employees who contribute to the United Way campaign and the amount we raise is a testament that the programs United Way supports through the Y are critical and effective.

When the Y talks about social responsibility, we refer to caring for our neighbors. I hope you will join us in contributing to the United Way campaign, so together we can achieve these Bold Goals for our community.

In service,

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Inspiring a Love of Movement

Join the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati and Cincinnati Reds mascots on Thursday, August 14, 2014 to unveil an exciting new fitness program for children called Born to Move™.  The free Born to Move™ party on Fountain Square will be held from noon until 1 p.m. Families are invited to participate in the program that utilizes energizing music, games, dance, magic, and the power of imagination to encourage kids to get active.

The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati is the first local fitness facility to offer the Born to Move™ program; classes will be available at several Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky YMCA branch facilities this fall, and in many YMCA afterschool programs.  "This is an exciting program that will be available for children, from ages 2 to 16," said YMCA of Greater Cincinnati Executive Director of Program and Leadership Development Cindy Tomaszewski.  "The Y is committed to helping children develop habits that will foster a lifelong love of physical activity.  These classes are designed to build self-esteem at every age, while helping children master new skills."

Born to Move™ classes are designed to engage specific age groups, and involve a fun, motivating, and scientifically proven mix of age appropriate movement and music to help children develop positive physical habits.  For more information about the Born to Move™ program, contact the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati at (513) 362-YMCA or visit the website MyY.org.

HEALTHY LIVING

Bring Friends, Make Friends -
Let's be Friends!

According to Science and Technology research,  YMCA Camp Ernst is all about traditions, and this fall we're resurrecting the tradition of Women's Wellness Weekend (WWW)! A group of eight volunteers have been meeting all year with Program Director Megan Gierhart to plan a weekend of camp fun designed just for women. The program includes yoga, stress relief, crafts, fitness classes, women's health sessions presented by physicians from The Christ Hospital, and of course, classic camp activities like hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, ziplining, campfires, and more!

This is a great opportunity for caregivers to take care of themselves. At camp in the summer, the staff members frequently hear moms say, "I wish I could go to camp!" And now, they can. Committee member Kathy Wayman says she is looking forward to "meeting new people, being creative together, and going horseback riding."

The weekend is scheduled for September 12-14 and is sure to become an annual event. Women will stay in Lakeview Lodge and the Yurt Village, eat meals prepared for them in the Lakeview Dining room, and spend the weekend exploring YMCA Camp Ernst's 365 acres of woods, fields, creeks, and ponds.

Gierhart says, "We designed a weekend for women to get together with friends and to meet new friends to do some classic camp activities, and to try new things. It's basically summer camp, but just for women!" WWW cost is $150 ($140 for YMCA members). Register by phone (859) 586-6181 or by printing a form from our web site myYcamp.org

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The Y is the Y - It's all about Strengthening Community

Inspirational is the one word that YMCA of Greater Cincinnati Healthy Living Director Kiana Trabue uses to describe her recent visit to YMCA facilities in Mexico. Kiana was invited by the Y in Mexico City to be the keynote speaker for the third annual Congress of Physical Culture and Sports. "The audience was very engaged and excited to learn about all we are doing in Cincinnati, pertaining to diabetes prevention," she said. "They shared their experiences working with members who have diabetes and those at risk of developing the disease. They asked lots of questions about what more they could do, as related to the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program."

"Going to Mexico City, seeing the great work that is happening there, and sharing what we do here, was very inspiring. My biggest take away was no matter where you are in the world, the Y is the Y and it's all about strengthening communities," said Kiana. In addition to serving as the keynote speaker at the Mexico City YMCA Congress, she and her traveling partner Jason Bradshaw, were able to visit the YMCA Community Development Center and Preschool, the YMCA Center of Special Education, the Y Home for Metropolitan Minors and enjoyed visiting with children at several local branches.

"Everyone I came in contact with was very warm and welcoming to Jason and I," said Kiana. "We were both inspired and impressed by what the Y does for the community in Mexico City and how the children demonstrate the Y core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility."

The YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at risk for type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps to improve their overall health and well being. For more information about the program, call (513) 731-0115, email [email protected] or visit the website www.MyY.org.
