Toledo-Lucas County Public Library Hosts Return of Financial Fitness Series

During the month of October, the FOC coaches will return to neighborhood libraries throughout the city as the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library once again hosts the Financial Fitness educational workshop series as part of its Spending Smarter, Living Better initiative.  The initiative is aimed to increase the library system's service to the community by spreading personal financial and investing information, and increasing public knowledge of the resources.

The Financial Fitness series will take place at the following branches: Heatherdowns, Locke, Mott, Kent and the Main (downtown) branch. The participating library branches will provide free food, beverage, and a chance to win prizes to registered participants. Registration is available on line or by calling 419-259-5209 for more information.  Click here for a complete list of workshops.
Financial Coaching for Homeownership

Financial coaching is a proven winner in helping people attain their dreams of homeownership. Because coaching is focused on long-term, financial behavior change, people are able to build their credit scores and financial management skills needed to be successful at homeownership.

Locally, the FOCs work with community development partners such as LMHA, United North and Habitat for Humanity to help clients achieve the American Dream of Homeownership in these arduous financial times. For example, Crossroads FOC recently partnered with Habitat for Humanity to help a single mother of three advance her goal of homeownership.

In May 2014, the client met for the first time with financial coach Lisa Urbanyi, after being referred by Habitat for Humanity because she was over the debt limit allowed by Habitat's homeownership program. Since working with Lisa, the client has successfully eliminated 30% of her outstanding debt and has opened a Twin Account credit building loan, creating a new, active installment line of credit that has already helped her increase her credit score! The hard-working single mom has resubmitted her application to Habitat for Humanity and has been accepted into the program!

This is just one example of how community development organizations are partnering with FOCs to use financial coaching as a catalyst in the creation homeownership opportunities for families in Toledo's neighborhoods.
