Tonight's Movie Starts Around 7:30 Under the Stars for Final Asphalt Cinema

Summer fun continues as one more evening of activities takes place for Asphalt Cinema. Don your sweat shirts, and settle into your lawn chairs or onto warm blankets by 7:30 p.m. for the early start of our final free movie under the stars: Monsters University! Join the fun tonight, September 12, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Impett Park, 3207 West 153rd Street, north of the Giant Eagle at Warren Village Shopping Center. See the flyer, here.

Enjoy activities sponsored by Cuyahoga Arts & Culture and games with prizes sponsored by local business owners. A children's DJ starts at 6:30 p.m. Beverages, popcorn, and hot dogs are available for purchase from Kamm's Corners Farmers Market. Best of all, the movie and fun are FREE of charge, thanks to our sponsor, Fairview Hospital.

Cleveland Heroes Run & Little Heroes Dash Take Place This Sunday, September 14

No matter whether you're a fast runner or prefer to stroll, join the Cleveland Heroes Run to support our community and those who gave their lives in the name of serving others. The race raises funds for the West Park Cleveland Police and Firefighters Memorial Fund, established in 2002, to create a lasting Memorial to honor both Police Officers and Firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty while either serving the citizens of Cleveland's West Park area or while living in the community.

KCDC is a proud sponsor of the 13th Annual Cleveland Heroes Run, a five-mile and two-mile community run set for Sunday, September 14. Opening ceremonies begin at 8 a.m. The run starts at 8:30 a.m. It begins and ends at St. Joseph Academy, 3470 Rocky River Drive. The entry fee is $25 race weekend. The event also features a free Little Heroes Dash for children ages 7 and younger, sponsored by the West Park Family YMCA. Details are on the flyer and waiver form here.  

Rides, Food, and Games at Annual OLA Fall Festival

Our Lady of Angels (OLA) Church holds its annual Fall Festival this weekend, September 12, 13, and 14, at 3644 Rocky River Drive. The fun begins Friday evening at 5 p.m. and includes rides, food, and casino games. Live music features polka on Friday night, rock-n-roll on Saturday night, and Irish music in the late afternoon on Sunday. Raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win one of four prizes, with the winning tickets being drawn Sunday night at 10 p.m. This year's prizes: $5,000, $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000.

Friday: 5 to 11 p.m.
Saturday: 1 to 11 p.m.
Sunday: 1 to 10 p.m.

A steak roast takes place on Saturday evening, beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday features fried chicken dinners from 1 to 4 p.m. Please bring your friends and family to this popular neighborhood event! For more information, call 216-252-2332.

Be Well, West Park! Join an Eight-Week Adult Wellness Challenge

You are invited to take part in a fun competition, which is sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic and local businesses. The goal is to learn current health trends and become motivated to stick with a fitness program before and after the holiday rush! Weekly programming will include a Walk and Talk with a Health Professional, where specialists from the Cleveland Clinic will give updates on their fields of expertise, and then answer questions on a walk outside in West Park during October.

Schedule: Wednesday, October 1, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
at the West Park YMCA, 15501 Lorain Avenue
This is a starting assessment of total cholesterol, blood sugar, BMI, weight, and BP. Participants have FREE admission to the Y during these hours, with free exercise classes offered. Flu shots will be available by Walgreens staff.

Thursday Walk and Talk Sessions, 6 p.m.
Thursday, October 2, through Thursday, November 20, at the West Park YMCA
 
Final Assessment
Saturday, November 22, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the West Park YMCA for final health numbers achieved.

Cost: $10 per participant to benefit programs at the YMCA

The Cleveland Rovers Battle Pittsburgh RFC at Impett Park Tomorrow

Come support Cleveland Rugby on Saturday, September 13, at 1 p.m., as the Cleveland Rovers take on league rival Pittsburgh RFC in a classic Steel City grudge match at Impett Park, 3207 West 153rd Street.


Both teams want bragging rights and a leg up on the league standings. Expect a good old-fashioned fight to the finish! After the match, join the fun and meet the players at P.J. McIntyre's, 17119 Lorain Avenue, the Rovers' official sponsor bar.

The
West Park Kiwanis Club presents the West Park Dine & Dance, a social evening of dance, food, and fun on Saturday, September 20, starting at 6 p.m. at the Cretan Party Center, 3853 West 168th Street. The event raises money for local charitable organizations. Tickets are $35 per person. Learn more in the flyer, here.
 
A recently repaved section of Puritas Avenue between West 150th Street and West 160th Street has been given new "sharrow" pavement markings. Because many residents are unfamiliar with these new markings, the City of Cleveland has written a fact sheet to explain these roadway markings and signs. Learn about sharrows, here

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority has begun improvements to the West Park Rapid Station. These include the removal and replacement of damaged curbs and sidewalks and resurfacing the asphalt. Construction signage, barrels, and flaggers will be used to direct vehicular traffic and buses while the work is being completed.

The first Little Free Library in West Park was installed recently in the front yard of 3545 Granton Avenue as a way to promote literacy for adults and children. It's part of a national program that has received positive reviews. Read more in the Sun News here.
 

Help Franciscan Village Give Mary a Hand! Donations are needed to restore a shrine that was built decades ago. All contributions are tax deductible and may be sent to Franciscan Village, Attention: Grotto Restoration, 3648 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland, OH 44111.  

  

On Tuesday, September 23, three teachers from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam will talk briefly about the way their faiths see Abraham, a pivotal figure in the origin of these three monotheistic faiths. The program takes place at River's Edge, 3430 Rocky River Drive, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. See details here.    

     

In honor of national yoga month, the yoga teachers at River's Edge are offering a FREE yoga class on Saturday, September 27, from 10 to 11:15 a.m. All levels are welcome and no previous yoga experience is needed. Bring a yoga mat and water. Extra mats will be available at the class.

 

The 2014 Annual Stroll & Roll 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Walk takes place on Saturday, October 4, at 9:30 a.m. to benefit MetroHealth Friends of Mothers and Infants. Join the fun at the Jefferson Park Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. Events include pumpkin painting, a pet costume parade, and scavenger hunt. The park is at 13200 Lorain Avenue. See details here.  

 

Several West Parkers are creating quilts, totes, purses, and more for a show at the Don Umerley Civic Center, 21016 Hilliard Boulevard. Hours are Saturday, October 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, October 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. The West Shore Rotary Club, serving the communities of West Park, Fairview Park, and North Olmsted, is holding its main fundraiser on Saturday, November 8. It's a reverse raffle dinner at the West Side Irish American Club, 8559 Jennings Road, from 5:30 to 11 p.m. and includes a full buffet dinner and open bar. The Rescue Inn was hit with some huge medical bills recently. To help pay them, the Kyle Carestia Memorial Fund will be hosting a fundraiser at The Third Place Tavern, 3314 Warren Road in Warren Village on Saturday, November 8, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. This will also be a little birthday celebration for Pam Alerine, the owner of Style Mutt Dog Boutique & Daycare, 3525 Warren Road.
