Letter from the Executive Director

"Change"

Since our last newsletter, that single word probably describes LAMI better than any other word or phrase.  Change is definitely an adrenaline-producing event and can add to an organization's stress as well as unlock its untapped potential.  I'm very pleased to say that we've tackled some very significant changes and set ourselves on a course that will allow us to continue to evolve over the coming years.  The support from our partners, staff, volunteers, and community is very gratifying.

One serious change occurred at the beginning of this fiscal year when the Port cut us back $125,000 or 37% which dealt a devastating blow to our plans to scale up.  With the close of our fiscal year on June 30, 2015, I'm delighted to report that we were able to control our budget and live within our means.  It meant that we had to temporarily scale back our programs and scale back our ambition but we exceeded our "reset" commitments to the community.

LAMI will soon be a generation old and during that time, the world has changed and in turn, changed very substantially around us.  Almost every element of our operations is affected by this change and failure to acknowledge this change and embrace it will cause us to become irrelevant.

One thing that has not changed and will not change is our commitment to our community to serve our underserved youth and help them achieve a better and brighter future.

Through the pain of the change process, we've had to say goodbye to some friends and make some changes to long-standing processes and procedures.  We wish the very best to our departed friends and thank them for their significant contributions to LAMI.

Volunteer Tom Corey (L) and Bruce Heyman (R).

We've been able to introduce new friends to our mission and are already seeing the fruits of the new energy and creativity.  New procedures, processes, tools, computers and furniture are yielding exciting results that will only blossom as we move forward.

I know we could not deliver our award winning and effective programs without you and your generosity of skill, time, hard work and spirit.  With our recent performance, your continued support and the changes we've made, LAMI is sailing "full and by" into the future.

Thank you!

Bruce Heyman

Volunteer Update

"Down on the Dock"

Summer is in full swing on the brigantines, and our volunteers are rocking it.  A fine crop of new faces is joining the veterans for voyages this year.  Their presence is energizing us all.

We're accumulating a fun crew for the season, too.  When you come aboard, you'll find Ren Phoenix, Anna Spring, and Leah Keller on Irving; Rory Kane, Melissa Collins, and (volunteer-turned-live aboard) Ryan Cowper on Exy.

Ed Steiner has a wonderful line-up of help to work in the new DECK House art exhibit - a relocation of the presentation put together for Tall Ships last year by Joleen D'Rage, featuring drawings of the building of the brigantines by renowned artist, Scott Kennedy.  Check it out.  It's pretty cool.

Scott Kennedy drove up from Mexico to help with the art installation at The DECK House.

Dockside classes went well this year.  They'll restart in the fall, but stand by - there may be a few surprise ones between now and then.  Navy Days - or Fleet Week, as it may be called this year - is on the agenda for the first week of August.  The end of the month sees us off to San Diego and Dana Point for festivals.  Join us.  These events are always a blast, as we have a chance to open our beautiful boats to the larger public, and to show off what we do.  We also have the opportunity to hang out when the day is done, and get to know each other better.

On that note, a final highlight.  Crew training has been exciting lately, and last Saturday, we made it even better.  We're cooking up ideas for social events following sails, and we kicked off  that campaign with a potluck dinner once the boat was "put to bed."  We battled some real wind all day, then nourished ourselves with good food and great conversation. This meal was the first, but certainly won't be the last.

I leave you with a video, shot by Aaron Kagon that day, of Irving in the wind.  Enjoy... and come sailing soon!  ~Marann Fengler

Charter Our Vessels
"Planning an alumni or reunion event?"

Why not hold it on one or both of LAMI's twin brigantines?! Let your alumni groups know about the Official Tall Ships of the City of Los Angeles and what a great venue they make for a memorable get-together either dockside or under sail.  We can handle all the details including full catering and local accommodations or you can simply charter the ships and make it a "bring your own food and beverage" affair.  We now have great partnership deals with many local LA Waterfront attractions and hospitality providers so come for a sail and stay for the weekend. Contact the LAMI office to help plan the perfect event for your group: ask to speak with Alice Taylor at 310-833-6055.

Last year, our beautiful boats made the cover of Crazy Shirts of Hawaii's 50th anniversary catalog.

This year, Deloitte US chartered our vessel and crew for a video series titled "Journey to Exceptional Performance" - equating  the journey to better performance to a long-ago ocean voyage.

All revenue earned from private charters help support our year-round TopSail Youth Program.

For more information, contact Joleen D'Rage at 310-833-6055 or email [email protected].

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity to some but was actually two years, Renae Little has left the boat.  Yes, Renae is searching for greener pastures elsewhere leaving big shoes to fill on board Irving as acting mate.  Thank you, Renae for your dedicated years of service.  We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

In other news, Renae hasn't traveled too far yet.  She's jumped in to help LAMI as part-time bookkeeper.  She comes from a long history of experience of sailing and QuickBooks and we think she'll make a great fit up in the office once she cleans the tar out from under her fingernails.

This just in: Exy Johnson and Boy Scout troop 188 from Colorado have participated in a beached vessel rescue and recovery on Santa Cruz Island.  Captain Rob just reported yesterday that the Brigantine crew and scouts were assisting in USCG communications and the safe transportation of the beached vessels' occupants. All involved are OK and unharmed and Exy and her crew are being hailed with thanks from the CG cutter at the scene.  Well done Exy!  Keep making us look good.

Back at home things are quieter but active.  We have hosted over a thousand students from L.A Unified School District with Beyond the Bell iConnect summer program for a crash course dockside class on our ships.  It's been a great way to train new crew and volunteers on tour-giving and teaching stations while still having lots of time in the day to do maintenance.

Speaking of maintenance, we've got lots of it to do.  If you are handy or just want to get dirty with us, we can keep you occupied.  Please call in to the office or the boats and find out when and what we are doing as the list grows faster than we cross items off.  We always need help from anyone who fancies themselves a woodworker, electrician, engineer, mechanic or teacher.  Come one, come all.  And please don't forget about our Wish List!  In-kind donations are tax-deductible too.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

As many of you know, we must raise $1 Million Dollars each year to keep our one-of-a-kind educational program available to underserved youth throughout Los Angeles County.  The amount of money we are able to raise directly impacts the number of scholarship programs (no cost programs) we can offer schools and youth groups each year.  With the start of our new fiscal year, we already have a waiting list for the scholarship program.

Please consider renewing your membership, making a financial gift  or sponsoring a school or youth group - we can't do what we do without YOU!
