A Year of Going "Higher and Higher"

All summer, the KSDS faculty and administration have been planning for a fantastic school year! We can't wait to see you back at school in a couple of weeks!
Welcome Back!

We are excited about the amazing 2016-2017 school year to come, and look forward to welcoming our KSDS community back to school!

What you are reading now is our weekly newsletter called the Tov Lada'at, (in English, "Good to Know"). The Tov Lada'at is our weekly school announcement newsletter, which will provide families with calendar updates, important announcements, sports schedules and links to required forms. It will be sent to families on Sunday mornings. Please keep the Tov as a reference throughout the week as it keeps you informed of all that is going on here at Krieger Schechter Day School. Each week, the Tov will also be posted at the bottom of the KSDS website in the Spotlight section.

This week's Tov is the "Back-to-School" edition, which includes important back-to-school information. If you read one e-mail this week, it should be this one; every parent is asked to carefully review the linked Beginning of School Year Parent Checklist for all forms and action items. Please read carefully, and make sure your student is fully prepared to start the school year.

Enjoy the rest of your summer.

B'Shalom,
Rabbi Moshe and the KSDS Administrative Staff

Back-To-School Parent Checklist (links to required forms and action items)

In order to keep this "Back-To-School" Tov edition more streamlined, we have created a separate, full parent checklist of all forms and action items to be completed prior to the start of school. Click here for a Beginning of School Year Parent Checklist, with links to ALL forms and action items to be completed. Many of these items are mandatory, prior to the start of school; thank you for carefully reviewing the linked checklist (those items are NOT listed separately in this Tov email).

Students in Grades 1-4 and 6-8 will have the opportunity to visit their classrooms (Lower School), set up their lockers (Middle School) AND meet their teachers before the first day of school. You will be able to drop off your classroom supplies. No need to RSVP, just come on by. (Kindergarten and Grade 5 students will be able to bring in their supplies and meet their teachers during their respective orientation programs on Monday morning, August 29.)

Since August 29 is the day before school starts, we will be able to offer only this one hour for "meet and greet" time. This is a time period to say hello in general and to drop off supplies. We ask that parents allow teachers to be available to talk with all students during this time; if you have a particular item that you would like to discuss with the teacher about your individual child, please email the teacher to arrange a different time to meet. Students who cannot attend during that hour will have ample opportunity to get settled in on the first day of school.

5.  Kindergarten Orientation for Parents and Students - Monday, August 29, 8:30 - 12:15 pm
We look forward to welcoming all of our kindergarten students and parents to KSDS! Class assignments and specificorientation times have been mailed; please contact Meg Gillespie
([email protected])  if you have not received your letter, or if you have any questions. Students should bring their school supplies with them to Kindergarten Orientation.

6.  5th Grade Orientation for Parents and Students - Monday, August 29 from 8:30 - 11:00 am
Please see the information flyer  HERE for more details. We look forward to welcoming all of our 5th grade students and parents! 5th graders should bring all of their school supplies with them to 5th Grade Orientation.

7.  Welcome New KSDS Faculty!
In addition to the new faculty members announced in June--Lorin Obler (3rd Grade GS); Cara Parsons (MS Science); Lilach Arie (MS Hebrew)--we are thrilled to welcome additional new faculty who joined the KSDS community this summer. Please join us in welcoming:

We also share that Kay Schuster (MS Math) has decided that she will be retiring from teaching and will not be returning to Krieger Schechter this fall. We wish Kay Mazel Tov on her 45-year teaching career!

8.  New Parent Orientation, New Parent Renweb Account Setup, Welcome New Students

All new parents are asked to set up their Renweb (KSDS' student information system) accounts prior to coming to New Parent Orientation; some time will be spent at orientation practicing navigating parent aspects of Renweb. Instructions for setting up your parent Renweb account can be found  HERE.

In addition to welcoming all of our new Kindergarten families, we also welcome our families with students new to Grades 1-8. Welcome to the KSDS community!

9. Information about the Hot Lunch Program and MS Salad Bar
We are continuing our partnership with www.orderlunches.com to process all of the hot lunch orders this year.  To view  an information sheet which details the instructions to register and order hot lunches, click HERE. The combo meal will include an entrée, vegetables, fresh fruit and beverage (milk on dairy days and juice on meat days; water is always available). On dairy days, you will be able to order an "entrée only." Beverages are available daily.

Please remember the order periods--we are not able to accept late orders. The order period will open on the 5th of the month prior to the month you are ordering and will close on the 20th.  An exception will be made for the current order period, which will close on August 28th instead of the 20th.

Salad bar will continue to be available for all Middle School students, on Mondays and Thursdays this year. Students in Grades 5-8 will be able to purchase salad via the salad bar AND hot dogs/french fries in the Stulman kitchen. A variety of fresh veggies, salads and chicken will be available Mondays and Thursdays. The cost per pound is $5.50--students will walk through the salad bar "line," have their salads weighed and the cost will be recorded. The cost of a hot dog or an order of french fries is $2.00.

If you would like your Middle School child to be able to purchase salad, please send a check, payable to Krieger Schechter Day School. We will keep the funds "on account" and when the balance reaches $5.00, you will get an email to remind you to "deposit" more funds to your account. If we don't have an account for your child, he/she will not be able to participate in the salad bar program.

10. Lower School Enrichment Program Information
The fall session of Lower School Enrichment classes will begin on Tuesday, September 6th.  Please complete online registration prior to that date (registration site and class descriptions may be accessed via Parent Checklist above).  Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Please contact Arielle Miller with any questions at [email protected].

11. Middle School Athletics Information
We are excited for the beginning of our Fall Athletics Season, which will include Soccer and Cross Country. The start date for soccer tryouts is Thursday, September 1 (for 5th-7th graders), beginning at the end of the school day (8th graders will join 5th-7th graders at continued soccer tryouts on Tuesday September 6). During the first three days of tryouts the students will be evaluated and placed on either an A or B team. The Cross Country Team will begin practices (no tryouts required; all interested students are placed on the Cross Country Team) on Monday September 12, beginning at the end of the school day. The team will begin to learn the dynamics of running a two-mile race.

Please see the Athletics Pages on the KSDS website for more information and registration. We are ready for a great set of sports seasons this year, and look forward to seeing your middle schooler out on the field, the track or the court! 14. Updates from the Library!!
We are excited about the makeover that sections of our library received over the summer, as new technology was installed and new furniture brought in to create a cozy reading space. We encourage families to continue to support our library and our school's love of books. Consider donating a birthday book for your child (click HERE for the  Birthday Book Order Form). Each new book will receive a bookplate with your child's name for the occasion. In addition, donation cards are available to benefit the Library to mark any occasion; contact Meg Gillespie at  [email protected] for more information about the cards.

15.  Reminder about Birthday Parties, etc. and Shabbat
IMPORTANT:  while this is not a new policy, we are reminding families of this important rule in our school: All school families are asked to keep the religious practices of other families (and the school) in mind when scheduling parties. Parties should not be scheduled on Shabbat or Jewish holidays and host families should consider the Kashrut practices of all families. Please note that the ending time for Shabbat shifts as the year progresses and that some holiday observances fall on weekends. Please refer to a Jewish calendar for Shabbat ending times and any weekend holiday observance days. This policy helps make our school community the warm, inclusive place that it is.
