Message from the Mayor
Upcoming town hall meetings & next steps
Dear Milton Residents:

First and foremost, I'd like to thank our area Fulton County Commissioners for setting up town hall meetings to discuss the 2017 Fulton County property tax assessments. I urge you to consider attending one or both of the meetings detailed below, and again, I strongly encourage you to consider filing an appeal if you feel that your assessed value is inaccurate.

I would also like to take the opportunity to provide a few additional thoughts and comments that may give more insight into how assessments are conducted, authority for those assessments, and action steps to consider going forward.
  • The Fulton County Board of Commissioners is a separate entity from the Fulton County Board of Assessors (BOA). While BOA board members are appointed by Fulton's Board of Commissioners, the BOA is established under state law and charged with determining the fair market value of all real and personal property in the county. (This is true for all Georgia counties.)
  • Based on the above details, this means that the City of Milton has no direct control over the BOA, its appointees, or its assessment efforts.
  • While we do not have control over the Fulton County tax assessor (BOA), we do have a voice and strong, established relationships with our county and state delegation. I, as well my fellow Council members, have reached out to our legislators and county elected officials to see what can be done collectively.
  • We are working on this end as your elected officials, but also as Fulton County homeowners ourselves. However, this issue will need our citizens that are affected to be proactive with the County and the Assessor's office.
  • Your next steps can be to attend one of the town hall meetings noted below, share your thoughts and concerns, learn more about the appeal process, evaluate your assessed value, and if appropriate, take the final step of completing the appeal process online or by mail
I hope to see you at one of the town hall meetings next week. Until then, rest assured that we are actively looking out for our citizens' best interests and will do everything in our power to do so.

Sincerely,

Joe Lockwood, Mayor
