Trail Closure Updates

Fort Ancient area:  The Little Miami Scenic Trail is closed and impassable  between Senior Road in Morrow and Route 350 in Oregonia through the end of November, 2016, due to construction.

The closure is due to erosion of the Little Miami River riverbank as its course has changed to undercut the trail berm. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is responsible for the remediation which includes stabilizing the bank and building a small bridge over the affected area to accommodate trail use while allowing natural changes in the course of the river.

The aerial view above, from Dirk Morgan's drone, shows the trail ending near the top of the photo.

Milford: The trail near Shawnee Run is now open, although the erosion under the trail is not yet corrected. A detour is in place around the failed culvert. Cyclists must dismount and walk  through the detour area. Shawnee Run Road remains closed until repairs are competed.

For updates on all trail closures please see our website, littlemiamistatepark.org.

Benchmark Outfitters Supports FLMSP
L to R: John Theuring, Liz Lamar, Steve Murphy, Richard Kassar of Benchmark, Joe Hermann, Brad Dailey of Kuhl.

by Liz Lamar

A big thanks goes out to Benchmark Outdoor Outfitters owner Richard Kassar for hosting a fundraiser for FLMSP at his Blue Ash store on September 15. Five bucks gave donors a pint glass donated by Kühl Clothing Company, three MadTree beers and a chance to win a pair of Kühl pants.

Volunteers had a chance to talk about the work we do and encouraged patrons to join our efforts.  Proceeds from the evening went to FLMSP, totaling almost $400 and five new  FLMSP memberships!  Next time you're in Benchmark be sure to thank Richard and his staff for their support and check out the great products they carry, including those Kühl pants!

Share a Bike Tour!

Photo: VBT, Natchez Trace

by Ed Cloughessy

About two years ago we were perusing this newsletter when a short piece caught our eyes. A fellow biker shared news of a company, VBT or Vermont Bike Tours, which was offering an interesting trip on the Natchez Trace in Mississippi.

Unfortunately, when we investigated we were only able to add our names to a Wait List. Aware now of such a group we happened upon another trip biking from Charleston to Savannah.

Fortunately we made that reservation and have been enjoying VBT's amenities ever since: Florida's Amelia Island/ St. Augustine, Southern Vermont, finally Natchez Trace, and Poland.

We are grateful of the original notice and look forward to other readers' recommendations.
If you would like to recommend a favorite trail or a bike tour, please reply to this newsletter or send an email to [email protected]. We'll publish your recommendations in a future TrailMail.  - Ed.

The Power of One

New volunteer Liz Lamar has cleaned, sealed, and stained several wooden benches along the trail, even hauling her own water to do so. Thank you, Liz, for keeping these trail amenities looking great!

Liz is another example of one person making a difference for us all. Find your opportunity to give back to the trail here.

Thanks, Randy!

The last two years the Department of Natural Resources has provided a seasonal employee to work in the Little Miami State Park. Randy, above, just completed his last mowing of the trail berm and completed his seasonal assignment. He is a dedicated worker and loves the trail. Thank you, Randy!

What's This?

Here's another puzzler found along the trail, probably left from railroad days. It consists of a rotating dial mounted on a concrete post. The dial has arrows on it.

If you can identify this artifact, please let us know, and we'll include your information in the next TrailMail. Respond to this newsletter, or email  us at [email protected].

Wasson Way Project

Cincinnati City Council has budgeted nearly $12 million to purchase 4.1 miles of unused rail corridor running from Montgomery Road in Evanston to Wooster Pike in Columbia Township, another big step toward completing a multi-use trail that could ultimately stretch from Victory Parkway near Xavier University to the Little Miami Bike Trail.

Milford Trail Closure

"Repair options are being weighed at the moment and we hope to have the bike trail reopened before the end of the year," said Eric Heis, public information officer for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Go to Enquirer article
