Season of Giving: How Do You Give Back?
It's the time of year when many people think of giving to causes and organizations they support, both financially and with their time. At Deschutes Public Library, we have a Foundation, numerous Friends organizations, and volunteers that are integral parts of making library magic happen every day.
- Your gift to the Deschutes Public Library Foundation provides sustainable services and programs, including free cultural and author programs, outreach to under-served children and seniors, and early literacy programs. You can make your donation here.
- Our libraries are supported by strong Friends organizations that provide essential financial support. They host used book sales and donate back to their local libraries. Consider joining one in your city: Friends of the Bend Libraries, Friends of the Redmond Library, Friends of the Sisters Library, Friends of the Sunriver Library, and Friends of the La Pine Library.
- All of our libraries are supported by the essential work of a corps of volunteersIf you have an hour or two a week to spare, and you can commit to at least 4-6 months, Deschutes Public Library can put you to work at your local library. Learn more about volunteering here.
The Perfect Gift for Book Lovers: An Evening with an Award-winning Author
If you're holiday shopping, may we recommend tickets to an Author! Author! presentation by Dave Eggers, Anthony Doerr or Siddhartha Mukherjee (or all) for the book lover in your life? Tickets are just $25 each, or $75 each for premium seating as well as a private reception with the author. It's also a feel-good gift: all proceeds  benefit Deschutes Public Library programs and services. Learn more about Author! Author! and buy tickets here.
Know Digital: Downloads of Fun
Black Friday, Cyber Monday ... how about Everyday is Free Day at your library? You can browse and download from the comfort of home and check out up to 15 eBooks or digital audio books at a time with OverDrive. You can even download and keep popular magazines with Zinio and up to five songs a week with Freegal. And don't forget Hoopla, our digital movie and television streaming service, which also features graphic novels. Get started with all of our digital resources here.
All Aboard! Train Man Returns this Month
Michael Lavrich, better known as the Train Man, returns to the Downtown Bend Library to share his extensive collection of model trains. All ages are invited to watch and listen, as the trains chug and whistle their way around the tracks. Lavrich's collection represents running trains of the 1920s and '30s and are made by Lionel, Dorfan, Ives, and American Flyer. Trains will run December 17-21, but be sure to check here for exact times that trains are running. Our gratitude to the Train Man for making this a beloved tradition for so many children and children-at-heart in Central Oregon.
