Monumental Story 7/2/13
|
(Note: This motivational story is written by JoAnna Kai Cobb, a Monumental Runner who overcame Crohn's Disease to reach her Monumental Goals.)
"It's possible."
 | JoAnna Kai Cobb |
On April 18, 2003, my doctor told me that getting well was possible. For months, I had suffered from a mysterious condition that caused severe abdominal pain, weight loss, fever, and more. The culprit was Crohn's disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects the digestive system. My own body was destroying my intestines, slowly killing healthy tissue. Strangely, this knowledge lifted my spirits. Understanding the problem meant there was a solution, and my doctor had said that with a positive attitude, a healthy lifestyle, and medication, a normal life was possible.
As time passed, I gained strength. Even though abdominal pain was always present, I learned what made it feel better and what made it worse. While walking one fall day, I decided to run. After less than a quarter-mile, I had to stop to rest. However, while huffing and puffing on the ground, I discovered something. The Crohn's pain was gone.
Employing logic, I reasoned that if I ran longer, I could prevent the pain longer. That night, I registered for the 2007 500 Festival Mini Marathon. Soon thereafter, I questioned my doctor about the safety of training for and participating in an endurance event. His answer was familiar.
"It's possible."

There are a lot of exciting developments for the 2013 Monumental. As you can see above, the list includes a new merchandise store, an outstanding training program, a locally based pace team, a new elite athlete coordinator and new community partnerships. With all that we have going on we don't want you to miss the new format at monumentalmarathon.com
In addition to the new navigation there is some cool new content. One that is definitely worth a look is the Monumental Challenge page.
We are well ahead of record registration pace but if you haven't registered yet, now is the time to commit. Training programs kick off this month and it's your chance to be a part of the Monumental action in 2013.
If you've already registered and you need a hotel, there is NO REASON TO WAIT. There are only 200 rooms left for Friday night and 60 rooms left for Saturday. With the projected 13,000 total participants and other events taking place on the same weekend, we know the rooms will sell out. If you want to stay within walking distance of the start and finish, don't wait another day:
As always, the best way to stay up to date with the Monumental is through Facebook and Twitter
Stay tuned to monumentalmarathon.com for continued updates, new content and for all the details on the Monumental Marathon, Half Marathon, 5k and Kids' Fun Run.
Yours in running,
