On June 17, 2016, the federal government's Bill C-14 became law. Physicians and nurse practitioners are legally permitted to assist in the death of a competent and consenting adult with a grievous and irremediable medical condition who is suffering intolerably and whose death is reasonably foreseeable.
Family physicians play an important role in ensuring transgender patients receive respectful, effective and appropriate health care. However according to a 2015 TransPulse Project survey of transgender patients in Ontario, approximately half of respondents reported feelings of discomfort discussing transgender health issues with their doctor.
