Public Transportation
US Department of Transportation  - September 25, 2014
Last year, I came to Detroit with former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan and Attorney General Eric Holder to let this city know that the Obama Administration is committed to moving Detroit forward.   At that time, we announced the release of $24 million to repair broken-down buses and to put new security cameras on buses. Last week, I announced a $12.2 million TIGER grant to the M-1 Rail Project that is part of a downtown renaissance and a longstanding effort to grow jobs and improve transportation access in Detroit.
In Transition - Fall 2014
This year, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) decided that a ribbon-cutting alone would not suffice. The agency announced the opening of the first phase of its long-awaited Silver Line-a heavy rail extension through the suburbs and edge cities of northern Virginia-with a singular video. In it, suburbanites are roused from their homes by an irresistible groove. They dance, in an awkward flash mob, across their lawns, down the street, up a set of stairs and right into a waiting train. Once seated, goofy smiles and toe-tapping persist.  Metro's tagline: "Good times are ahead."
Transit System/Partners
Portland Tribune - October 1, 2014
Fifth and Sixth avenues on the Portland Transit Mall are being compared to such iconic thoroughfares as Broadway in New York City and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.  No, really.  The American Planning Association on Wednesday designated downtown Portland's Southwest Fifth and Sixth avenues as one of the 10 Great Streets for 2014, along with Broadway, Pennsylvania Avenue and seven other landmark streets in the country.
The Daily Journal - September 29, 2014
No one is indispensable, but Mike Scanlon comes pretty close. Under his watch since 1999, SamTrans and especially Caltrain have been revitalized. Under previous leadership, Caltrain had slipped from being a viable to an almost forgotten form of transit in the Bay Area. Today, it is a national success story and Scanlon deserves much of the credit.
The Washington Post - September 29, 2014
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx spent a little time on the road  this month touring facilities like this Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp. plant in Lincoln, Neb., to tout the importance of investing in transportation infrastructure.  Here's a bit of what he said about his Lincoln trip on Fast Lane, the Department of Transportation's official blog:  I met some good people yesterday.
Governing - October 2014
Keith Parker had run large-scale transit operations in Charlotte and San Antonio, but he realized from the start that Atlanta would be his toughest assignment yet.  The beleaguered Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is the ninth-largest enterprise of its kind in the country. But ever since its beginnings in the early 1970s, it has been ensnared in racial, regional and partisan acrimony. Georgia's state legislators have never been shy to criticize or to micromanage the agency, which they have denounced as inefficient and unreliable.
Safety
Progressive Railroading - September 25, 2014
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) yesterday issued a special investigation report on the recent increase in fatalities of railroad and transit-rail roadway employees working on or near tracks.  The "Special Investigation Report on Railroad and Rail Transit Roadway Worker Protection" provides details of 14 fatal accidents in 2013, and includes recommendations to several federal agencies on ways to reduce fatalities. Last year, 15 roadway workers died, the most killed on duty in one year since 1995's 12 fatalities.
Labor News
St. Louis Public Radio - September 26, 2014
Members of St. Louis' local transit union demonstrated outside Metro headquarters Friday morning, in a protest dubbed a "Rally for Respect."  Local workers were joined by members of other branches of the Amalgamated Transit Union, as well as members of other local unions to form a crowd of about one hundred.  The group circled the Metro building for about an hour, chanting phrases such as "workers, riders, side-by-side," and carrying signs that read "They called us an Oreo."
Green News
CBS - September 26, 2014
Septa will get $87 million to shore up its transit systems against the ravages of climate change, through a grant announced today at a flood-prone station in Delaware County.  Local congressmen joined Septa officials at the Sharon Hill station of the Route 102 trolley, where, an average of 12 times a year, flooding renders the tracks impassable.  It's one of problems the so-called "resiliency" funding will address.
