Transit Coach Operator Apprenticeship Committee Has First Live Meeting

The Center held its first Transit Coach Operator Apprenticeship meeting February 29-March 3. This committee, developed as a part of the American Apprenticeship Initiative project, consists of nine transit agencies and their unions and the ATU International. During this meeting labor and management subject matter experts came together to:
  • Review and edit the APTA Recommended Practices for Transit Bus Operator Training
  • Discuss the elements of a successful training program
  • Develop a technical work plan to guide the work of the apprenticeship committee
Participants were deeply engaged and enthusiastic about developing this new transit coach operator apprenticeship program. For more information please contact Project Manager Tia Brown.
BART Pilots Transit Elevator/Escalator Training Consortium Fundamental Course on Electrical Schematics

Boolean Expressions, Truth Tables, and Logic Circuits were on the minds of the participants of Bay Area Regional Transit's (BART) pilot course 203: Interpreting Electrical Schematics and Diagrams. This course was developed by the Transit Elevator Escalator Training Consortium to provide participants with a basic knowledge of the electrical schematics and diagrams within a modern escalator. The course was taught during the week of February 28, 2016 on the third shift (10pm to 530 am). The content of the course included Boolean Algebra, Boolean Expressions, Truth Tables, Logic Diagrams, and Programmable Logic Controls (PLCs). The class reviewed how the logic circuits were applied in various controllers' diagrams and schematics. The class used the binary code to understand the addresses and assist in troubleshooting of the various PLCs' input/output devices. Information collected through the pilot observations and review will be used to make minor edits to improve this course, including the possible addition of hands-on instructional strategies and activities as well as assessment refinement.  Overall, participants were actively involved in the piloting of the course.

Public Transportation
Planned public transportation investments will help drive more business sales in the emerging tech sector, according to a new study commissioned by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). Titled "Public Transportation's Role in the Knowledge Economy," the study examines the emerging tech sectors in three communities and the role of public transportation in enhancing access to employees and promoting entrepreneurial infrastructure.

More Singaporeans are living in condominiums and more are relying on public transport instead of cars to commute to work, according to the latest national household survey by the Department of Statistics (Singstat) released on Wednesday (Mar 9). The proportion of resident households living in condominiums and other apartments rose to 13.9 per cent last year, up from 11.5 per cent in 2010, the survey found. Four-room flats remained the most common house type, with 32 per cent of households living in them.
Transit System/Partners

One of the chief arguments for those opposed to MBTA fare hikes is that the T should not make riders pay more for a system that can be unreliable. T officials however say the revenue from increased fares would help pay for fixing one of the system's chief sources of delays - its aging infrastructure, particularly its signals. When the T's signals break, they go to the signal repair facility in South Boston. It's cluttered with tools and trinkets, and looks like someone's garage workshop - except that instead of fixing up your dad's old Mustang to take it out for a ride on the weekend, you're fixing up your main source of transportation.
Betanews - March 2016
If you live in the suburbs, such as on Long Island, you pretty much have to own a car. Without a vehicle, getting around in a reasonable amount of time can be downright impossible. Sure, taxis are available, but that is way too expensive.  City dwellers, however, can get by without owning a car. Quite frankly, having a vehicle can be more trouble than it's worth, with hard-to-find parking and frequent dents and dings. Instead, public transportation is the wiser choice -- it is fairly affordable and dependable. Unfortunately, buses and trains are not always modern -- especially in NYC. Luckily, this is changing a bit, as NY Governor Cuomo announces an initiative to introduce free Wi-Fi and USB charging to 2,042 new buses.
Labor News

NJ Transit and rail worker unions Tuesday were closer to a contract deal to head off a strike than they were a day earlier, a union official said. Stephen Burkert told reporters during a break in the negotiations that talks were progressing without heated words. About 4,200 union workers have been without a contract for about five years. A strike is authorized for 12:01 a.m. Sunday if contract talks fail. NJ Transit has said it would add buses to its Atlantic City-Lindenwold route, which links Atlantic City with PATCO's High-Speed Line to downtown Philadelphia. If the unions strike, PATCO will honor NJ Transit's Atlantic City rail line tickets to PATCO's first stop in Philadelphia, at Eighth and Market streets.
Building Transportation Infrastructure
Atlantic Journal Constitution - March 9, 2016
State lawmakers want to use their off-season to come up with a regional transit solution - one that might perhaps oversee or take the place of MARTA and the Atlanta region's other fragmented transit systems. Two resolutions pending in the House and Senate (House Resolution 1605 and Senate Resolution 1085) could be voted on in coming days. They would create separate study committees to consider whether reforms are needed in existing transit systems and whether a comprehensive region-wide system should be established.
Figure out what your community wants before you drop a single dime on a public private transit project. That was the message from Denver's key financers and architects behind the redevelopment of Union Station to members of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada who visited the historic train station today hoping for some insight on how they might put together a public-private partnership for transit. The Union Station and transit tour included riding the Regional Transportation District light rail and touring the commuter rail station at Denver International Airport and several panel discussions.

The Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) board today is expected to award a contract for more than 800 new 7000-series rail cars. The deal includes a commitment from the winning bidder to build a multimillion-dollar assembly facility in Chicago, CTA officials said in an emailed announcement. The contract is valued at $2 billion, a local CBS affiliate reported. The plant would be the first of its kind for the city in more than 35 years. The last rail cars manufactured in Chicago were Amtrak's Superliner units, which were built at the now-shuttered Pullman-Standard factory in 1981, according to the CTA.
Economic Issues
The Boston area is one of the fastest growing regions in America. By 2035, economic centers such as the South Boston Waterfront, Kendall Square, and the Longwood Medical Area are expected to generate more than 30 million square feet of new development and thousands of new jobs. Neighborhoods throughout the metropolitan region are well positioned for both job and population growth, and are looking toward transit-oriented development to boost their economies.
New York City subway and bus riders are telling Gov. Andrew Cuomo to make good on a promise to invest billions in the city's aging transit system.
Members of the Riders Alliance gathered at the state Capitol in Albany Monday to encourage Cuomo and top lawmakers to include up to $1.8 billion for transit upgrades in this year's state budget. Cuomo has vowed to spend $8.3 billion on the Metropolitan Transit Authority's $29 billion modernization plan-but transit advocates say details are lacking.
