Packing for a Trip? Consider this Advice from Organizers Northwest!

  • As Rick Steves says, "when traveling, you'll meet two kinds of tourists - those who pack light, and those who wish they had." The size of a typical carry-on is  9" 22" 14". Think of the ease and pleasure of NOT lugging multiple bags and limit yourself to this size, when possible.
  • When packing, spread everything out on the floor and take a good, hard look at each item. Consider whether that item is really worth carting all that way. Will it really bring you pleasure or is it something you'll wear / use only once? Will you be able to buy it later if you really need it? Create a "maybe pile" and "definitely" pile rather than just packing without editing.
  • Roll your clothing rather than folding.
  • Use packing cubes to separate items and keep them organized in your bag.
  • The size limit on checked liquids is 3.4 oz or less. Fill your small bottles with your liquids ahead of time and use them. See how long it takes to get through them based on your use so that you know how much to bring.

Your Questions, Answered - by Organizers Northwest
Q: Do those plastic bags that you can buy at Bed, Bath & Beyond, that you suction the air out of with your vacuum cleaner, really work? Of course on television they seem like the answer to a traveler's prayer, but do they stay flattened? Do they really make a difference? Will all my clothes look terrible when they are unpacked?
A. You can find the answer on our blog, right here!
