Summer Through the Eyes of a Crew Leader
Last year, Kat was looking for a summer job before she started her senior year in college. She
heard about our Summer Crew Leader position and liked the idea of working with young people, building her supervisory experience, and spending the summer outside.
She applied and was offered the job.
Kat didn't have any construction experience, but Tree Trust gave her intensive, hands-on training she needed to get going. Her crew of young people was tasked with tearing apart a rotting staircase at Alimagnet Park in Apple Valley and building a brand new one of stone.
You might wonder how a small team of 14-21 year olds, many with no experience outdoors or in construction, could achieve such a feat in just 9 weeks (and achieve they did). "
I learned how attitudes can be contagious, the power of kindness and positivity, and the importance of respect, which I gave to my crew members, and they returned to me."
"I've seen the power of the Summer Youth Employment Program to positively impact youth and the community. Being
a Crew Leader was a gritty and challenging
experience that gave me the
confidence I needed to apply to the Peace Corps."
Kat was recently accepted to serve in the Peace Corps in Zambia, and we wish her great luck on her next steps!
