Distinguished Women's Luncheon
|
|
On Sunday, July 8, more than 60 women from all nine provinces of The Episcopal Church were honored with a luncheon, a certificate, and a Distinguished Woman pin featuring a one-of-a-kind design in recognition of their dedicated service in their home dioceses. Yewande Austin, founder of The Global Institute for Diversity and Change, offered opening remarks. Each Distinguished Woman was presented individually.
Closing remarks from our president
Good afternoon. I am Lisa Towle, President of the National Board of Episcopal Church Women. I congratulate each of you who has received recognition today as aDistinguished Woman, and I appreciate all those who are here in support of you. Your work in your communities and throughout the Church has happened over many years and has been so very diverse. We are inspired by your dedication, and we who are dedicated to women's ministries stand on your shoulders.
I'd like to offer a reflection from Bishop Steven Charleston, one of our Triennial Meeting's keynote speakers. His words seem particularly appropriate today:
"Listen. Today a single word spoken will carry the message of a thousand hearts. The one truth shared will unlock the hope of a million silent souls. This is the day of hearing, when justice breaks its silence and mercy finds its voice. The quiet ones will be heard and the lost ones recognized. The clamor of the crowd will be hushed. The language of the poets at long last understood. Today is a day of messages, of understanding and of wisdom. Listen. Someone is speaking to you, telling your story, honoring your vision, giving your dreams the substance of prophecy, the joy of the common word that holds the world together."
We are here to share part of your story, to honor your vision, to thank you for helping to hold our world together and demonstrating in word and deed what it means to be part of a beloved community.

The Art of Listening Workshop

Matthew 11:15 reminds us, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” And yet, how often we fail to listen to each other, ourselves, or God? Today, Kay Lindahl reminded us in her workshop, that listening is in fact, an art, a choice and a gift. It is an art because it requires that we pay attention to listening as much as speaking. It is a choice because it requires that we intentionally open our hearts and minds, be interested and fully engaged. It is a gift because it requires that we are fully present to the speaker.
She continued that “listening inspires our spiritual growth, nurtures our soul and the quality of our listening impacts what people say.” She gave workshop attendees a practical opportunity to sit in groups of two to intentionally listen to each other. After the exercise, participants reported a positive experience. Later, she shared three practices that aid better listening: cultivating silence, reflection and becoming present. She then gave us examples of how we can easily include these practices in our harried, daily lives. All in all, we listened and learned a great deal!
Day Four of Triennial Meeting

Before this week, I didn’t really know what to expect from the 79th General Convention of the Episcopal Church. Being a member of Girls' Friendly Society has opened many opportunities up for me, but this is probably one of the biggest opportunities I have received in my life. Now I’m here, a 14-year old girl from California among all these other members of my church, and I am speechless. I have now heard Presiding Bishop Michael Curry preach three times in my life, two of them happening during this week. I have met so many people who, like me, love God and this Church. Finally, I have felt closer to God these past few days than ever before. As a member of Girls' Friendly Society, or GFS, I have promised to share God’s love with all people. I got the opportunity to do just that today. My fellow GFS members and I got to visit two churches to help possibly start up new branches. Two other girls, two of our leaders, and I attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Austin. After the service, we joined the congregation for breakfast tacos, which I had never had before today, and talked with many of the members about what it is we do in GFS. I also learned what a small world it really is when I found out the priest who gave the sermon had once preached at my home church back in California. After our time at the churches was up, we had the honor of attending the ECW's Distinguished Women’s Luncheon, where we had amazing food and got to hear the beautiful Yewande Austin speak for the second time this week. Ms. Austin has done so much for the people on this Earth and is continuing to do so. She has truly inspired me to continue to help people through GFS and on my own. Today, two of our members gave a workshop on using social media to help promote causes such as stopping violence against women and girls, which GFS is currently promoting. We also got the chance to speak with some of the women at the workshop about our personal experiences with GFS and how it has really helped shape our lives. I have had such a wonderful time so far at convention, and I can’t wait to see what else this week has in store for us!
