Tropical Ice Safaris

We write this pre-Christmas newsletter in a Kenya that has rarely looked as beautiful.  Our
"short rains" have swept across the entire country for the past two months, and it is a long time since the farmers have seen their land so rich.  The plains are green, the rivers swollen, and Mount Kenya's summit peaks are dazzling white with snow.  After nearly a decade of confused weather patterns it is easy to feel that we are back on track.

This past year has produced significant Tropical Ice highlights:
Rwanda Gorilla Safari
We've introduced the gorillas of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park as a superb extension possibility to our main itineraries.  These three day excursions have been very successful, and it's nice to note that all of our visitors have been in good enough shape to track Diane Fossey's original family group, which now numbers twenty-nine gorillas.

Volcanoes National Park
Our recently developed "Wind, Sand & Stars" walking safari in northern Tsavo has proved to be the trip we set out to find: the ultimate African bush adventure.  We challenge anyone to find a more remote wildlife region in Africa, where seemingly endless open plains, tantalising water pools, and the palm-fringed sandy beaches of the Athi and Galana rivers combine to make
a magnificent walking experience.

Out In The Blue
We've moved up into north-central Kenya and our "Out In The Blue" walking
safari across the spectacular hills of the Ndoto mountains, moving our camps on the backs of camels, has become popular especially with past visitors who have experienced our big Tsavo walking safaris.  "Out In The Blue" offers one the chance to travel through country untarnished by roads, roamed only by the Samburu people, into primeval tropical jungle, across sandy flats and over the ridges of the most atmospheric mountains you could ever imagine.

And, of course, our "Great Walk of Africa" safari has continued to fully satisfy the expectations of every visitor.  This safari which has been the subject of several books, once voted "Outside Magazine's" Trip of the Year, has virtually attained cult status.  Our 2012 departures are filling up but spaces still remain on the following departures:

At Tropical Ice, we don't dwell on the past.  We're always looking to the future, searching out new places far from the crowds, checking out what lies at the end of the road..........
Our safaris begin where the roads end.

Iain, Alex, and the entire Tropical Ice crew would like to wish all our friends out there a VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR.
