TROPICAL MEETS CRAFTSMAN BEAUTY          JUL 2014
Tropical Meets this Gulf Breeze Craftsman Home
With July 4th upon us, this stunning Craftsman-style bungalow is a celebration of American handicrafts.  Built in 1959, the house was later remodeled, then had a recent porch addition to provide a casual and welcoming entry area.  Nestled in Gulf Breeze, the home nicely uses a palette of tropical colors. The Mission styled entry door in a bold ocean blue is reminiscent of our gulf waters and provides a pop of color against the sunny yellow exterior with classic white trim.  The gabled entry roof is finished with rustic white half round shaker siding.  To complete the transformation, all windows were updated with white double hung high impact windows, providing additional hurricane protection.

$5,000 Home Improvement Sweepstakes Winner Gets Kitchen Remodel An exciting part of my job involves calling one of our newsletter subscribers and letting them know they were selected as the winner of our $5,000 Home Improvement  Sweepstakes.  This year, I had the pleasure of contacting Mr. Nalbone in late February to let him know the good news.  It's always interesting to hear folks' reaction.  I caught Mr. Nalbone on a rare day where he was very sick.  He could only say in a puzzled tone, "Really, I'm the winner?"  I confirmed his award and he requested, "Can you kindly call me back next week? I'm so sick."  I gave him a follow up call.  With health improved and in good spirits, we set his first consultation with Mr. Majors.
After much discussion, the Nalbones decided to remodel their outdated kitchen.  The new look included larger cabinets extending to the ceiling for additional storage space.  New countertops were custom cut and installed, freshening up the space and making it easier to clean.  To finish it out, they added a deep stainless sink with sleek new faucet.

Question:  We have had a lot of rain this year and it seems like there are swarms of mosquitoes in my yard.  How can I get rid of these pests?
-J. Sutrick

Mike's Reply:  Thank you for your question.
By nature, mosquitoes are as natural along the Gulfcoast as white beach sands on our beaches.  There are some ways to protect yourself and minimize the number of mosquitoes at your home.  Below are some helpful tips to take the bite our of mosquitos.

* Repair broken screens, windows or doors to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

* Avoid being outside at dawn or dusk, then mosquitoes are more active.

* Wear long-sleeved clothing and pants and use mosquito repellant.

* Drain standing water that may be collecting after storms in old tires, buckets, flower pots, or unused plastic swimming pools.

* Clean leaves from rain gutters and remove any standing water on flat roofs.  Also, check around outdoor faucets and air conditioner units for puddles that remain for several days.

* Change water in bird baths and wading pools at least once per week and stock ornamental pools with fish which love to feed on mosquitoes such as minnows, goldfish or guppies.

* Cut down weeds or large trees adjacent to the home and mow the lawn regularly.

* Protect boats with plastic tarps that don't accumulate water.

Majors Helps!
Landscaping Project for Family a Success

Over 30 people volunteered on Saturday, June 28th to help clean up landscaping at the home of our "Self-Sacrificing" family, Carolyn Butler and Debbie Lewis in Milton.  The mother-daughter teacher duo were selected as the winners of the 2014 Home Repair project.

Help from United Way of Santa Rosa CountyMajors Home Improvement, and the community provided much needed landscape cleanup for the family.  A large oak tree growing over the home was trimmed by McAtee Lawn Service and numerous trees growing near the perimeter of the home were cleared out.  Over 10 trailers full of debris was hauled off the site.  Additionally, contractors from Avalon Air Conditioning & Heating and a local electrician inspected other needs while helping with the clean up.  "It was awesome to see skills, talent and hard work of so many in our community (plus a lot of good tools.)  The landscape cleanup was a success!" states Andrea Sutrick, Project Coordinator from Majors Home Improvement.

The landscaping day helped to prepare the home for Majors installers to come back out on July 26th to replace windows and doors, install vinyl siding, provide kitchen cabinet repairs, and more.  We are looking forward to the big finale to complete this home improvement transformation!
