The 10% Campaign is a project of the Center For Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS). The campaign encourages you to spend 10% of your existing food dollars to support North Carolina food producers, businesses and communities. Why 10%? In North Carolina, we spend $35 billion on food every year. If we spend 10% of our food dollars on local product, we can infuse over $3.5 billion into the local economy. As avid supporters of the Durham Farmers' Market, you already know the many advantages to shopping locally. So, why join the campaign? It will re-affirm your commitment to shopping locally and it sends a strong message to policy makers about the importance of local foods! For more information

We're promoting our Calvander which is our firm, flavorful, Asiago style cheese, as it's the perfect cheese for the fall and winter months. Made with the rich milk from our Jersey cows, it has a piquant flavor balanced with buttery undertones. We partnered with fifteen restaurant throughout N.C. which have added Calvander to their menus. Find the list and some recipes they've shared with us online.
Enjoy what they've created at their restaurants next time you eat out or cook something at home with the wonderful choices at the market. Add to a cheese plate, shave or grate for pasta, salads, or savory dishes. We have a few recipes at our booth as well.
Paneer is available this week. It is an Indian frying cheese that we make when it is on the menu at Lantern Restaurant and is wonderful served with cooked greens or curried dishes. It will also be featured at Piedmont Restaurant soon. We will also have Hickory Grove, Carolina Moon, and Dairyland Farmers.
Hickory Grove is our own recipe that is semi firm with a rich, savory flavor. The washed rind on this cheese adds extra flavor but is not too strong. Use for snacking with apples, savory bread pudding, or cheeseburgers. Our Carolina Moon is similar to a Camembert. We have some well aged and a little strong as well as some that are milder. We can help you choose one that you'll enjoy. Our Dairyland Farmers cheese is a tangy, moist cheese that we make every week. It's delicious with hot pepper jelly or added to sandwiches.
We have all our varieties of sausage this week including a little Smoked Andouille, Country Breakfast, Sage and Maple Breakfast, Mild Italian, Hot Italian, Bratwurst, and Chorizo. We also have smoked ham hocks, bacon, and Spare ribs for roasting or grilling. Try our ground beef this week for delicious hamburgers, meatloaf, or spaghetti sauce.

Hurtgen Meadows Farm
Hurtgen Meadows Farm is very pleased to report that we received multiple recognitions at the 2017 NC State Fair this week. Our strawberry jam took first place out of 25+ entries in that category. This marks the third time we have garnered the first-place ribbon for strawberry jam (along with one Best of Show) and is especially satisfying since we grow all the berries on our farm. For the first time this year we entered some of our vegetables. We were pleased to see ribbons on our sweet potatoes (third premium and a fifth county sweepstakes horticulture ribbon), purple bell peppers (sixth premium), and eggplant (tenth premium). It's a great experience to enter and even more satisfying to be recognized for all the hard work we put in daily on the farm.
This week you will find on our tables lettuce, arugula, turnips, green and yellow beans, eggplant, cured sweet potatoes, fall squash, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, collards, kale, and cherry red and watermelon radishes.
JAMS AND JELLIES
Our award-winning strawberry jam, peach, and peach mango jam and blackberry jelly are available this week.
Come by for a colorful bunch of dahlias.
All of Hurtgen Meadows produce, plants, fruits and flowers are naturally grown using sustainable practices - no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers are ever used on our farm. We'll see you at the Market!
The frost is on the collards! We have had frost both Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Now is the time to buy greens if you believe they should be "touched " by frost. We will bring collards, kale, turnip greens, sweet potatoes, apples, bell peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, fresh and dried herbs and zinnias.
