A fun fall hello from your Area 12 board!

Message from the Chair - Tessique Houston

Hello Area 12!
I am ready for fall, how about you?  Here in the Bay Area we are being hit with a bit a heat wave - 100+ inland!  It sure makes it hard to start thinking about Christmas music. (Wait, Christmas in October? YES!)
That's what we need to do right now - gear it up for Christmas. Handbells and handchimes are eponymous with Christmas, and our audiences and congregations love to hear us at this time of year. So we start working on it months out, preparing to be part of the Advent and Christmas services, and maybe even to give a Christmas concert.
I'm looking forward to seeing all those concert dates up on the Area 12 calendar and then trying to get to some of them (other than the one's I'm involved in)! Don't forget how easy it is to add your concerts to our calendar - click on the link on the home page, fill out the form, hit submit - easy peasy!
Our Area 12 elections are going to happening this month as well.  Please keep your eyes on your mailbox for that ballot and cast your vote for Chair-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer.
Until next time,

Tessique Houston
Election News
It's time for Area 12 to have an election!

Our By-laws require us to have at least two candidates for each position and I am pleased to announce that we have compiled a full slate of candidates for the elected officer positions of Secretary, Treasurer, and Chair-Elect.
The Secretary and Treasurer each serve a term of two years and may be re-elected for a second term. They may serve an unlimited number of terms, but only two two-year terms in a row. (So, if they keep getting elected, they can serve two terms, then they must take a term off, then they may serve two more terms, etc., for as long as they're willing to run and serve.) The Chair-Elect position is a six year commitment. The electee serves two years as Chair-Elect, then two years as Chair, then two years as Past Chair.
Our Nominating Committee, chaired by Mel Tully, has gathered the following slate of candidates for your consideration:
Ballots are being sent out right now to the address listed on your Guild membership, so please keep an eye out for them. They must be returned before the deadline listed on the ballot in order to be counted.
If you have any questions or comments about Area 12's election process or this election in particular, please do not hesitate to contact me.
My best,

Michèle Sharik
Past Chair
Communiqué - Barbara Meinke, Communications Director
Getting the word out is my job. What happens after that is yours! Take a moment to act on something. Maybe you'll sign up for a workshop or festival. Maybe you'll forward the information to someone who doesn't know. Maybe you'll reach out to help and push your handbell circle out a little further. Hopefully you'll do some of each! Here is an opportunity to do one or all three of those things! Apply or share or support our scholarship program. Here's more from our Past Chair.
One of my duties as Past Chair is to promote and manage the application process for the two scholarships offered by Area 12. The Jim Scott Memorial Scholarship provides funds for one ringer and one director attending their first Area 12 conference (held in even-numbered years), while the Patty Marquart Scholarship offers financial assistance for a director who wishes to attend the Handbell Musicians of America National Seminar, currently held each summer.
Because the 2017 National Seminar will be in beautiful Garden Grove, CA, Area 12 would LOVE to be able to offer the Patty Marquart Scholarship to a deserving director!  But we need YOUR help to do it.
As you know, financial times are tough all around. Area 12 currently does not have the funds to offer these scholarships. We ask you to please consider donating to Area 12 for this purpose. Area 12 is a registered non-profit charitable organization and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law, so it's a win-win!
If you would like to help send a director to their first National Seminar, please contact me and I will get the ball rolling.
And if you are or know of a director who has never attended National Seminar before, please encourage them to submit an application as soon as possible.  Click here for information and an application.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or comments about these scholarships or anything related to Area 12.
I hope to hear from you soon!
My best,
Michèle Sharik, Past Chair

Hello, Southern Nevada!

A hot topic at our Southern Nevada Back to Bells event was about social networking resources. There are many social networking resources that keep our handbell community connected - Facebook pages for learning about events (Handbell Musicians of America - Area 12), finding subs (Southern Nevada Handbells), or seeing what other choirs are doing (Handbell People and Handbell-L). For those who don't use Facebook, Handbell-L also has an email listserve via Google groups. People of all levels in the worldwide handbell community use these resources to ask questions, get advice, recruit new ringers, communicate ideas, and advertise their own events. Just click on a blue link and join the club!

We had a small but enthusiastic group of two at our Back to Bells workshop in Reno. Since both Derek Nance and I were instructing, we had a ratio of 1:1! It was great being able to answer all of their well thought out questions!

I'm thinking it might be fun to get our bell community together and do an informal reading session in January or February. If you would like to attend, or even host, please let me know asap. We don't have a date set for our 15th Annual Spring Ring yet, but I'll let you know as soon as we've made arrangements. If you have ideas for repertoire, contact me!

Hi there, SoCal!

I am pleased to report that the 2017 SoCal Spring Ring information and registration forms are now available on the SoCal web page! Just click that blue link and scroll the calendar over to April 2017, then click on the Friday night or Saturday morning event and you'll see links to open and download PDFs of the detailed event information and registration forms. Be sure to read all the details, then get your registration in to take advantage of the Early Bird deadline (not to mention the Member and Youth discounts). If you're on Facebook, you can head over to  Southern California Region - Handbell Musicians of America Area 12 (AGEHR) and click on Events. From there, you can share the events (including the concert, which is a separate Facebook event) with your friends and family and help us draw a large crowd.
I also would like to remind those of you who work in schools that Area 12 has a handbell and handchime loan program specifically geared to getting bells and chimes into the hands of school kids - public, private, or parochial. If that sounds like something you're interested in, please send an email to KatRyn Howell, our Education Coordinator.

Our SoCal Back to Bells event was very successful, helping 14 ringers and directors (including a family of six!) learn the basics of handbell ringing and managing a handbell ensemble with Barbara Meinke. We look forward to having these super people participate more with us as we all continue to learn and grow together.
Finally, is your group planning to play for Christmas? Lots of people travel during the holidays and like to hear bells, so let me know when you're playing or use our website calendar submission form -- even if it's "just" during your church services -- so I can make sure people know where they can go to get into the festive spirit.
Until next month,
My best,

Michèle Sharik

Greetings, CenCal!

Don't you love this fall weather we're having? This is such a great time of year, with temps falling, leaves turning, kids back to school, and a fresh start to many of our handbell programs.

I have a question ~ the only thing I love more than ringing in a reading session is directing a reading session. Would anyone be interested in hosting one, perhaps being endorsed or sponsored by Handbell Musicians of America? How about January or February? I'm thinking 2 hours for levels 1 & 2, and 2 hours for levels 3 & 4. I envision the day being more than just reading through new music, but including tips for musicality and "how do I ring this measure?!?".

The only event I've heard about in CenCal coming up is the possibility of a workshop in Santa Barbara. We'll let you know when the details are done! If you can help, please contact me or Scott Leggett (LA Metro Regional Coordinator).

Finally, let me challenge all you directors to encourage your ringers to join Handbell Musicians of America Area 12, and to especially sign up for our free newsletter (see top of side bar).

Happy ringing!

Greetings to you all!

Fall is in full swing will all our groups getting down to business in learning new music and preparing for performances in the upcoming months; it's my favorite time in the ringing season! We had very productive board meeting last month and I'm very excited about all the events planned in Area 12 in the coming months. If you are a member in the greater LA area, or somewhat beyond, you should have received a post card with information about the Spring Ring which will be held over two days, March 31 and April 1, 2017, in Pasadena, led by Artists of Timbré Ensemble. I encourage you to sign up soon as it will be a great event! You can find all the information by clicking  HERE.

We are still trying to work out a date a for a ringing workshop in the Santa Barbara area before the Spring Ring, so please stay tuned on that.

Till next time!
