Message from the Chair - Tessique Houston

Greetings Fellow Handbell Musicians!

I realized that I didn't wish you all Happy Thanksgiving in last month's posting, so.....HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I am so thankful for the wonderful people I know through handbells. I find I have friends I never would have met, except for our mutual love of this instrument. And they are people I can't imagine not having in my life - where would I be if I had never met them? But they are in my life, and I am so thankful for that and for the chance of meeting even more wonderful people!

In getting ready to make a the trip to Japan with Sonos, I realize I am actually a bit disappointed. I'm going to miss out on so many wonderful holiday concerts here at home! I wish you all great success in your musical endeavors, be they concerts or contributions to church services.

A very heartfelt thanks to those who ran in our board election (see results below). Their willingness to serve on the Area 12 Board is greatly appreciated. I look forward to working with all of them in the future (either on the board, or in any way we can get them involved). Also, a great big thank you to Mel Tully for serving as chair of the nominating and election committee. It was a big job and he did it with finesse.

And last, but not least, let me wish you all a very Happy Holiday Season.  I hope that you find joy, peace and love in all things during this season, and into the New Year.

Until next time,

Tessique Houston

Hi there, SoCal!

December is here and "it's the most busiest time of the year" for handbell musicians! Have you made sure all of your handbell concerts, holiday services, caroling events, etc., are included on the Area 12 web calendar?

This is FREE ADVERTISING for you, so I encourage you to take advantage of it. It's EASY! You can either email your event info to me or you can go to the Area 12 webpage and click on the "Submit Your Event" button, enter your information, and your event will appear on the web calendar automagically

And don't forget to use social media to advertise your events. If your group or church has a Facebook page, just create an event and then share that event on the Handbell Musicians of America - Area 12 and the   Southern California Region - Area 12 Handbell Musicians of America pages.

2017 SoCal Spring Ring information and registration forms are now available on the SoCal web page! Just click that blue link and scroll the calendar over to April 2017, then click on the Friday night or Saturday morning event and you'll see links to open and download PDFs of the detailed event information and registration forms.

One of the reasons I am here is to help you share handbells with as many people as possible, so please let me help you do that. Best wishes on this holiday season!

Until the New Year, m y best,

Michèle Sharik

It's hard to believe that 2016 is just about over with the one of the busiest seasons upon us for Christmas and other holiday ringing activities.  My first Christmas concert on November 29 will already be over by time you read this article, and it's off to the races until Dec 25.

I wish you all a happy holiday season! I hope you enjoy your performances and that you seek out others and go support our fellow ringers.

For 2017, I so wish everyone would take two minutes to submit your event to our events calendar. It's free advertising and you never know who may see it and come to a concert and bring friends! One event already listed is a benefit concert on Sunday afternoon, Dec 11, by LA Bronze and Grace Presbyterian Church in Long Beach; details are on our events page.

And I hope you'll ALL join us for our annual
Timbré Ensemble

March 31 and April 1

Mele Kalikimaka, handbell peeps!

So I have already kicked into concert season. This week alone I have loaded and unloaded handbells into my van nine times! Whew!!!!  But I love what I do and I know you all do too!  Thanks to some volunteers, it is not so bad. Be sure to thank yours!

I love the holiday season, I love seeing the looks of people enjoying the music and the ringers enjoying what they are doing. We are making a mark on people's days with our music. But we also need to take a step back and enjoy the holiday season and remember what it is about.

Again, Mele Kalikimaka!

Hello Northern California,

We had a unique class offered at the Redding Festival this year entitled "O Capes and Kettles". Class clinician Mary Balkow presented ideas and lots of great music for a few ringers to play at the Salvation Army Red Kettles this holiday season using music stands and a few bells. The big plus is not having to haul tables, pads, and covers. Just 4 or 5 people with two bells in each hand can play some beautiful music. Since the Salvation Army here in Redding struggles to find bell ringers in December, we thought playing Christmas carols instead of just ringing one of their silver bells would be different and fun! Instead of people hurrying by the Red Kettle, they may stop and spend a few minutes listening to the familiar carols and hopefully contribute some money as well.

Please remember to check the calendar for upcoming concerts in your area in December. I always look forward to hearing from anyone who would like to have their concert or workshop listed in our calendar. I wish you all a very Merry Ringing Season!

Ringcerely,

Nancy Schmitt
