Dear YI Yogis and Friends,

We are very excited to be hosting two very special events and one amazing weekend starting next Friday, Nov. 2, at The Yoga Institute in Houston.   A weekend workshop with internationally-renowned yoga teacher Dearbhla Kelly (Friday - Sunday)  and a special evening kirtan and concert with Dave Stringer on Saturday night. Dearbhla and Dave travel the world teaching and chanting. We have the rare opportunity this weekend to practice, learn, love, laugh and sing with two of best!  Please join us for this special weekend intensive.

Dearbhla Kelly marries the esoteric teachings of yoga with the practicalities of everyday life in classes that lift your spirit and energize your body. Best of all, her classes are FUN, combining depth, meaning and insight into something truly extraordinary.

She combines her knowledge of yoga, philosophy, therapeutics, biomechanics and science to deepen our experience and understanding of yoga. With her lilting Irish accent and Dublin wit, Dearbhla offers her joyful, liberating approach to yoga, on and off the mat.

Currently a dedicated Ashtanga practitioner, Dearbhla's asana teaching style is informed by her extensive training in Forrest Yoga, and in depth studies of Anusara, Yin Yoga, Vinyasa Flow and Yoga Nidra. She has taught classes throughout the world.

Dave Stringer is AMAZING!

"A volcano of voice!  Stringer gave the room a feeling of a down-home gospel jam, and one couldn't help but sing along!"  (Los Angeles Yoga Magazine)

"Dave Stringer has integrated his interest in Kirtan, an Indian tradition of devotional chanting, with his masterful grasp of Western popular music, creating an exciting style of psychadelic pop as informed by traditional Eastern music as the Beatles."  (All Music Guide)

"A departure from ancient kirtan.  Stringer's performance shaped the experience into a far more compelling musical encounter"  (Los Angeles Times)

Dave has been widely profiled in publications all over the world as one of the most innovative artists of the new Kirtan movement.  Initially trained as a visual artist, filmmaker and jazz musician, Dave's work underwent a significant shift when video editing work brought him to an ashram in Ganeshpuri, India in 1990.  It has also been informed by his service in teaching meditation to prison inmates and expanded by his interest and research in neuroscience.

An articulate and engaging public speaker, Dave weaves together an evening of music, mantra, chant and teaching with a wry and unorthodox sense of humor and sound into an ecstatic and sublime evening of Kirtan.

Dave and a diverse ensemble of accompanying musicians travel extensively, headlining festivals in North American, Europe, Asia and Australia.

He often collaborates with internationally celebrated yoga teachers.  Dave has released six CDs under his own name, and his music is played in yoga studios worldwide.  His voice also appears on numerous soundtracks, including the blockbuster film Matrix Revolutions and the video game Myst.

Dave's newest CD, "Yatra," a collaboration with singer Spring Groove, has recently been released by Mantralogy Records in the USA and Silenzio in Europe.

Join us for a weekend you won't forget!

Dave Stringer's sound marries the transcendent mysticism of traditional Indian instruments with the exuberant, groove-oriented sensibility of American gospel, and he is regarded as one of the most gifted singers in the genre.

The primary musical feature of kirtan is the use of call and response. The form is simple: a lead group calls out the melodies and the mantras. The crowd responds, clapping and dancing as the rhythms build and accelerate. The intention of Kirtan is consciousness-transformative, directing the singers to vanish into the songs as drops merge into the ocean.

The mantras are primarily recitations of names given to the divine. The true understanding of the mantras can be found in the sense of unity, well-being and timelessness that they elicit. The mantras quiet the mind, and the music frees the heart. Ecstasy is both the process and the product.

The Yoga of Intimacy
      with Dearbhla Kelly
dearbhla

Yoga is an exploration of the Self ...

a pilgrimage to the center of our own hearts. It's a fascinating journey, sometimes delightful, sometimes agonizing, but never dull. This profound intimacy with ourselves makes way for deeper intimacy with others and ultimately with the throb of life itself. This is a yoga of enchantment and wonder, will you listen to the call?

Registration for entire workshop (all 4 segments) is $205. Individual workshop segments cost $55.

Friday, 6:00 - 8:30 PM Partner Yoga:

Expect a playful, dynamic practice with opportunities for guided partner work with hands-on assists throughout.  Guaranteed to make your heart smile!  Come with a friend, lover, or no partner at all. Suitable for all levels. Everyone welcome.

Saturday, 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM Backbends:

Sweetness and ease (sukha) in backbends requires stability (sthiram), which comes from abdominals, thighs and bandhas. We will cultivate ease by focusing on stability and grace. Prepare to go deep and leave feeling exhilarated and bright.

Saturday, 3:30 - 6:00 PM Lotus Heart, Open Heart:

The spiritual heart resides at the center of the chest and is often depicted as a beautiful lotus flower, pure and unblemished. We will use mantra, mudra, meditation,

visualization to coax the petals of the lotus flower to bloom and pranayama for nourishment so that the lotus stays open. Light asana practice.

Sunday, 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Bhakti Shakti Flow:

Dive deep into your own heart and the pulse of your prana shakti and emerge in a field of shimmering radiant sensation. Dynamic vinyasa flow practice beginning with a kirtan led by Dave Stringer.

Workshop hours count towards Sacred Art Yoga RYT 500 certification.
