EJ Success Story

"I can't thank you enough Energetic Juniors.  Charlie had his first Little League practice this morning and afterwards he walked home on cloud nine.  He feels he may be able to be in the pitching rotation, the coach told him how much he had improved and that he thinks Charlie will be a key player this year.  It was the best athletic experience of Charlie's life.  Last year when he left the first practice he told me that 'now all the kids know I'm the worst player on the team.'  What an amazing change."

Answering all of your child-related health and fitness questions

"My son seems very stiff when he plays sports. I am concerned that he could hurt himself if he doesn't stretch. He tells me that it's not necessary. Please help."

- Barbara, New York city

Most children compared to adults are very flexible, but when they have tight hamstrings corrective action should be taken.  Hamstrings in children and adults have the same structure, so any hamstring stretch will work.  I recommend simple static stretches done in a gentle manner using proper form.

Because children tend to be very flexible many people believe stretching is not necessary.  Children are subject to developing tight muscles, especially during puberty.  Accelerated bone growth combined with a lot of physical activity can lead to aching, cramping muscles.  Stretching the hamstrings can help alleviate these proble
ms.  Teaching children proper stretching is important, as they can take this knowledge with them throughout their life.

Static One-Legged Hamstring Stretch

-Have the child sit on the floor with his right leg straight and the bottom of his left foot against his right inner thigh.
-The left leg is bent. Reach forward and hold for 20 seconds.
-Repeat using opposite legs.
Be careful not to bounce while stretching and only stretch till there is slight discomfort.

Toe Touches
-Have the child stand with feet shoulder width apart.
-Bend slowly trying to touch the toes.  Have the child reach only until they feel tightness or discomfort in the hamstrings.
-Hold each stretch for approximately 20 seconds, and repeat.

The Scoop on Sports Drinks

by Gabrielle Studenmund at Parents.com

We are constantly blasted by commercials and ads of sweaty athletes guzzling sports drinks.  They even reference the fact that these drinks can enhance athletic performance.

But are they okay for our children to drink?  I came across this great article by Gabrielle Studenmund on Parents.com that helped to answer this question.

Kids may be eager to gulp down sports drinks after basketball practice, but are the beverages necessary? On one hand, hydration is vital, and sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade contain water, carbs, and electrolytes (including sodium and potassium) -- and the taste may encourage children to down more needed fluids.

On the other hand, "it's unlikely that children who participate in youth athletics would require these beverages," notes Lawrence E. Armstrong, Ph.D., professor of environmental and exercise physiology at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. "A child's well-balanced diet provides ample amounts of electrolytes, water, and carbohydrates."

Dr. Armstrong offers this smart rule to play by: Sports drinks are better than water only when exercise is strenuous and continuous, lasting for at least 50 to 60 minutes, or if your child has a preexisting mineral or carbohydrate deficiency.
