Canines and Wine 2015

The 2015 Canines and Wine was our biggest success ever! Thanks to you, we raised $12,000, which will go a long way towards keeping all the babies in the Tyson’s Chance program happy and healthy until their forever families come along.

Our new venue, the Shelbyville Country Club, allowed guests to enjoy the perfect summer evening with festivities both indoors and out. Guests enjoyed the evening’s activities, including our silent auction boutique, a live auction, the "Give A Chance" game, author signings, a photo booth, and music provided by DJ Tim Paddock. As well as a new venue, the live auction was new to our event this year and included trips to Maui and Chicago, a basketball signed by Rick Pitino, and a football signed by 2013 Superbowl quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Joe Flacco.

Tyson Says: "Thanks to everyone who came and made MY fundraiser a success! Didn't I look handsome?"
Canines and Wine is our biggest fundraiser of the year and takes many hours of planning and preparation by our dedicated volunteers. We’ve already started planning for next year! We are always in need of help in a variety of ways, whether its by sponsoring a table, donating an auction item, or volunteering to work at the event. If you would be interested in volunteering for Canines and Wine 2016, send an e-mail to [email protected].

Mark You Calendars! Next year's Canines and Wine will be held on May 21, 2016. See you then!

New fund helps emergency medicals needs

Over the summer, a new fund, Boo’s Memorial Medical Emergency Fund, was established to help any of the animals in the Tyson's Chance program who require emergency or specialized medical services. This fund was named in memory of our founder and director Ashley Shelburne's beloved dog and first rescue Boo (right).

The first animal to benefit from this fund was a puppy named Conrad. Shortly after joining the Tyson's Chance program, he was rushed to Blue Pearl Emergency Veterinary Hospital. After an overnight stay at Blue Pearl and treatments including a blood transfusion and IV antibiotics, he is doing much better and will be available for adoption soon. Thanks to Boo’s Fund, his medical expenses were covered.

Your donation to Boo's Fund helps Tyson's Chance provide every possible resource during urgent medical emergencies. What better way to honor a loved one, commemorate a special event, or simply make the world brighter for an animal in need?

Donate your food bowls to your local shelter or rescue! Feeding out of traditional bowls is old fashioned. Make feeding a time for training! There are so many options for working your dog's brain and nose while eating: many interactive feeders are available for purchase such as Kong Wobblers, Buster Cubes, puzzle toys, and slow feeder bowls with compartments, but you can also get creative at home.

  • Simply scatter your dogs' kibble on the floor or outside in the grass and give them the command "find it" to slow them down and make them work to eat.
  • Place food inside of a brown paper bag and twist the top closed and let them shred it to eat is another fun game.
  • Mix their food with plain yogurt and/or broth and stuff it into KONGs or hollow bones, freeze and create a yummy treat that will keep them occupied and eager for meal time!

Switch it up to keep them entertained. Your dogs will thank you for adding these activities into their day! To learn how we use these methods with the Tyson's Chance dogs, see "Kennel Enrichment," below.

Have You Met...?
Lupe

Hi, I’m Lupe. They tell me I’m a Bulldog-Staffordshire Terrier mix, but I just think I'm love bug. Looking for a fellow couch potato? Need a belly to rub? I’m your girl! I love to play with others dogs and kids, but I’m not a fan of cats. I love my family at Tyson’s Chance, but I would love to have my own home and family even more!

Flash

Hi I’m Flash. I may look like a cat, and I like to play with other cats, but I LOVE dogs. I want to live in a house where I can curl up with another big fluffy dog. Let's make it happen!

Meet Miss Maggie

Tyson's Chance is pleased to announce the start of our equine rescue division!

Meet Miss Maggie! Maggie ended up at a sale in pretty bad shape and was rescued by a wonderful organization, then transferred to us. Mag has seen the vet and the farrier and is currently working on gaining some weight. She is in boarding with Cattail Creek Stables and receiving excellent care.

We hope this is the start of many more happy endings for our equine friends. With your help we will make a difference!

With this new project comes new expenses including boarding, vet bills, and farrier services. Please make a donation for Miss Maggie's care until her forever family comes along.

Kennel Enrichment

New program keeps the TC dogs happy until they find their forever families!

by Stephanie Jackson

We have introduced a new Kennel Enrichrichment protocol for our dogs in boarding.

Our Kennel Enrichment now includes activities to stimulate the dog’s brains. We’ve researched the best brain stimulators for dogs in boarding and discovered it’s working their senses and motivating them to seek and find.

A few of our Kennel Enrichment activities include:

  • Fun Buckets
Frozen blocks of ice that include treats, peanut butter, water, chicken broth, and, at times, pumpkin. This frozen block provides at least an hour of "seek and find" for the dogs.
  • Interactive Feeders
For some of our long time residents in boarding we’ve started feeding out of interactive feeders like puzzle toys, homemade PVC piping, and Kong Wobblers. We’ve discovered these items take the dogs longer to maneuver and in return working their brain to continue to move or shake the interactive feeder to receive more food.
  • Chews and Toys
Hard chew bones to chew are a necessity. They are also given soft toys to destuff and scatter.
  • Paper Bags
We have included feeding out of paper bags. Dry kibble is put in to lunch bags and the dogs are able to rip and destroy the bag to get to the food. Our vet assured us this is 100% safe and very fun for the dogs.

The most recent protocol we’ve implanted is “treat for calm.” We place a treat container on their basket or above their kennel. When they are calm, they receive praise and a treat. When they are barking or pacing, we wait for them to calm and they receive praise and a treat.

Since introducing the new Kennel Enrichment plan, we’ve noticed many of our “hard to keep” dogs have calmed down quite a bit.

We hope to continue to expand our Kennel Enrichment program by learning more about interactive activities.
