UAB CFAR is preparing for Competitive Renewal Submission
|
|
The CFAR Core Leadership is hard at work on its competitive grant renewal due in August 2018. We appreciate your responsiveness to the CFAR requests that may include biosketches, other support documents, progress updates, and other related information.
Strategic planning began in 2015 and we look forward to presenting our vision for our CFAR in the next five years.

Jodie Dionne-Odom
, M.D., assistant professor in Infectious Diseases on her selection to the 2018 class of James A. Pittman Jr., M.D., Scholars. This program recognizes the contributions of junior faculty and supports the recruitment and retention of highly competitive scientists and physician-scientists. Jodie's work focuses on HIV and sexually transmitted infections in women, specifically targeting novel ways to prevent malaria and STI during pregnancy in Cameroon.

Scott Batey wins CAS interdisciplinary team award

Dr. D. Scott Batey
and his colleagues have won the UAB College of Arts and Sciences interdisciplinary team award. This award supports the interdisciplinary research that is crucial to solving the world's most complex problems.The project is entitled "
Circumnavigating HIV Care: An Exploration of Spatial and Qualitative Factors
."
Drs. D. Scott Batey, James Willig

James Raper
will provide oversight of the entire study, including development and implementation of all policies, procedures, and processes. They will be jointly responsible for the implementation of the scientific agenda and the leadership plan, as well as the specific aims. They will ensure that systems are in place to guarantee institutional compliance with U.S. laws, policies including protection of human participants, data security, and facilities

Dr. Sadeep Shrestha
Awarded Quetelet Endowed Professorship in Public Health
This endowment pays tribute to Lambert Adolphe Quetelet for his dedication to science, especially in the areas of statistics and epidemiology. Dr. Shrestha’s research interests include epidemiology, infectogenomics, vaccinogenomics, pharmacogenetics, and immunogenetics of outcomes and sequelae of HIV, HPV infection, and infectious diseases.

The 1917 Clinic at UAB
is celebrating three decades and treating more than 12,000 patients living with HIV since its doors opened, a milestone that has defied odds.
|
|
The 1917 and CFAR Leadership met with Congresswoman Terri Sewell to share the tremendous work of our 1917 Clinic and affirm why her continued support of the Ryan White Program is so important for people living with HIV who are uninsured or underinsured.
|
|
Latesha Elopre presented her Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Award on Feb 14 at Medical Grand Rounds. Latesha's project focuses on developing an intervention to increase HIV-PrEP among Black Women in the South.

The Third Coast CFAR
is pleased to announce two new resources for HIV researchers with an interest in
Implementation Science
. Over the last two years, our Behavioral, Social, and Implementation Sciences core has worked closely with colleagues in the NIDA-funded Center for Prevention Implementation Methodology (Ce-PIM) at Northwestern to develop a series of workshops tailored to faculty engaged in or interested in HIV research. On the Third Coast CFAR website, you will find embedded videos of both the 101 and 201 courses as well PDFs of the slides.

UAB’s Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging
|
|
UAB’s Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging announces the availability of pilot/feasibility (P/F) project awards for investigators with a research focus to aging with the goal of developing applications to the NIH in the comparative biology and/or energetics of aging. The projects must utilize one or more of the three research cores of the UAB Shock Center, which can be found on the
Center’s website (
https://www.uab.edu/shockcenter/cores
)
. Applicants must consult with Core Leaders about the cost and feasibility of their proposed project prior to applying. Budgets (generally less than $10,000 although larger budgets are considered if fully justified) are developed in consultation with Core leaders and/or co-leaders. Awards are for 1 year. Applications from institutions outside of the UAB are particularly encouraged.
Note: Additional funds are available for studies utilizing Shock Center Cores and UAB’s Microbiome Core. For those interested in pursuing these grants, contact
