UCF Biology Professor on 'Monster Fish'

University of Central Florida zoologist William Crampton loves electric fish and that's made him one of the world's experts when it comes to these creatures. Friday, Oct. 3, he guided National Geographic Channel's "Monster Fish" show host Zeb Hogan on a trip to the Amazon River in Brazil in search of electric eels.

Two Faculty Research Grants Awarded

Every month, university wide, one student is honored with the Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Award for their time spent researching a subject of their choice. So far this year, five students from the College of Sciences have been recognized and honored for their hard work. Read more here.

Record Crowds Attend DSS
The College of Sciences Distinguished Speaker Series started off with a record crowd this month. The first talk took place Tuesday night, 9/9,  in front of a packed house. The event was hosted in a new location off campus. Located in downtown Winter Park, Cocina 214 is a cozy Mexican and Tex-Mex style restaurant and bar that serves as an enjoyable location for these talks. Talks are hosted at Cocina 214 each month, for more information on upcoming talks visit the DSS website.

You're invited to the Chemistry Department's Annual Fall Picnic. On Oct.17th at 4 p.m. in the Physical Science Atrium there will be vegetarian and regular jambalaya with bread pudding for dessert. Please join in festivities of recognizing Dr. Kevin Belfield for everything he has done for the Chemistry Department, and wish him luck in his new position.
NSC Hall of Fame
On Sept. 26, NSC and the Alumni Association hosted the Alumni Hall of Fame Reception at the Nicholson School of Communication. Many notable alumni were in attendance including Chris Gent, the vice president of corporate communication for the Kissimmee Utility Authority; Peter Cranis, an NSC adjunct professor and the vice president of marketing and communication for Visit Orlando; and Marla Weech, an anchor for News 13. Continue reading.

APS Local Link

The Tampa Bay-Orlando American Physical Society (APS) Local Link is a newly established local networking initiative within the Tampa Bay and Orlando areas.  The Graduate Society of Physics Students (GSPS) at the University of Central Florida and the Physics Graduate Students Committee (PGSC) at the University of South Florida have joined together and are working to connect students with industry professionals.

APS Local Link events will be alternating between areas in Orlando and Tampa Bay. For more information on events visit the APS Local Link website.

Local High School Students Try to Balance the Federal Budget
Any budget decision can prove to be a challenge, especially with the Federal Budget.  The Lou Frey Institute of Politics & Government at UCF recently hosted their Fall 2014 Symposium to help high school students examine the issues that the President's Budget Supercommittee could not solve. Continue reading.
