Applications Open for Sundance Screenwriters Lab

Many have heard of the Sundance Film Festival, but fewer are aware of Sundance Institute’s year-round artist development programs that cultivate and refine emerging directors, producers and screenwriters each year.

With current and soon-to-be alumni mapping out their next career moves, I wanted to share with you information on Sundance Institute’s 2017 January Screenwriters Lab, a five-day writer's workshop that is currently accepting applications through May 3, 2016.

Here are specifics for this program:

Application: Apply here.

Deadline: May 3, 2016

Dates: January 13-18, 2017 Size of Lab 12 projects each lab Location Sundance Mountain Resort, Utah

Eligibility: US & International Filmmakers; The Screenwriters  Lab supports writers and writer/directors developing their first or second narrative feature film. If you have previously had more than one narrative feature produced, you are not eligible to apply.

Description:  The Screenwriters Lab is a five-day writer's  workshop that gives independent screenwriters the opportunity to work intensively on their feature film scripts with the support of established writers in an environment that encourages innovation and creative risk-taking. Through one-on-one story sessions  with Creative Advisors, Fellows engage in an artistically rigorous process that offers them indispensable lessons in craft, as well as the means to do the deep exploration needed to fully realize their material. (Read about recent Lab Fellow Ryan Koo's experience  here .)
NYC: Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind

Too Much Light plays 50 weeks a year. Same time each week. Different show each week! If you’ve seen the show once, you’ve seen the show once. One time.

Writer Looking for Director for Sundance Labs Project

My name is Samantha. I'm in the midst of writing a screenplay I plan on submitting for Sundance labs. The story is about a girl in high school named Evan, her struggles with OCD, and how it effects her family. I already have a co-writer [although I'm open to another] and I'm looking for a director. At this point in time, the film isn't in pre-production yet so there won't be a big time commitment right away, but I want someone on the team now so that if the film is selected, they would be able to attend the lab. The application is due at the beginning of May, so the responsibilities right now would include being involved in some creative meetings and contributing to the development of the film as well as writing a 500 word bio on yourself for the application.

I'm looking for an MFA Directing Program student who has already graduated or will have graduated before January 2017. Diversity is important to me, so I'm really hoping to find a female director with a background different than my own, but I'm open to anyone who is talented and passionate about storytelling.

I want this film to contribute to the conversation on mental illness and invisible disabilities. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please contact me by email: samanthabhyde@yahoo.com -and we can exchange our work [I can look at your films, you can look at my script].

"Extraordinary…the best new play I’ve seen all year."  —Charles Isherwood, The New York Times

An epic tale about holding on to who we are and what we love in a country that forces us to fight battles we would not have chosen for ourselves, Father Comes Home From The Wars is a devastatingly beautiful dramatic work filled with music, wit, and great lyricism. Winner of the 2015 Kennedy Prize for Drama, this explosively powerful play set throughout the Civil War from Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks reveals the burden of history and its effect on an individual’s ability to transform.
