TFT MFA Candidate Kelly Pike Named Among
Best Women Student Filmmakers by DGA

“The DGA  Student Film Awards recognize talented new student filmmakers, and we congratulate this year’s exceptional recipients,” said DGA President Paris Barclay. “The DGA is committed to calling attention to new talent and encouraging greater inclusion in the entertainment industry. It’s not an accident that many of our past winners have made their marks on our business. We look forward to seeing what these awardees do next.”

AFI students won three prizes in the Western region, Columbia University students won three in the Eastern region. USC students nabbed two prizes, and a UCLA Bruin won one.

Past DGA female and minority student film award winners who have gone on to successful directing careers include  Ryan Coogler, Nicole Kassell,   Patricia Riggen,   Sylvain White  and  John M. Chu .

Alumnus Daniel Mahler's Costume Work Featured on Hairspray Live!
Daniel Mahler (MFA '12), worked as Assistant Costume Designer for Hairspray Live!, which aired on December 7thDaniel pulled and fit the 30 ensemble dancers, about 150 costumes in all. He was also the personal dresser for Harvey Fierstein, who played Edna Turnblad. Of the Hairspray Live! experience, he says,  "It was the perfect blend of theater, television and film and I couldn’t have imagined a better project to put all of my UCLA TFT skills to use.” The show’s costume designer, Mary Vogt, said, “Daniel was fantastic. His eye for color and shape gave an added layer to any of the costumes he touched which was most of them! I am very grateful for the excellent training he received at UCLA he was a very valued member of the team.”
New UCLA TFT Associate Dean
for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Named

Professor Myung Hee Cho, who has been a Department of Theater faculty member since 2009, is a respected scenic designer with international credits.
Teri Schwartz, Dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (UCLA TFT) recently announced that Professor Myung Hee Cho has been appointed as UCLA TFT’s Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as part of a campus-wide “diversity responsibility” initiative launched by UCLA Chancellor Gene Block and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh. Professor Cho, an award winning scenic designer, has been a senior scenic design professor in the Department of Theater since 2009.

“The strategic focus on diversity, in all of its complex forms, is central to our vision and mission at UCLA TFT,” Dean Schwartz says. “Diversity informs all that we do to create an inclusive and vibrant community that welcomes faculty, students and staff from all walks of life and with a focus on the kinds of humanistic stories, performances and research that reflect our multi-cultural world. I couldn’t be happier that Professor Cho has accepted our invitation to serve in this important role to help us advance these ideals.”

Cho will work with Dean Schwartz, department chairs, faculty, staff and students to generate exciting diversity initiatives for the School, and to provide a forum for inclusive conversation and best practices welcoming to all. In addition, Cho will help to foster policies and activities that will articulate best practices for searches, recruitment and retention for faculty and students at all levels.

“I am thrilled to take on this challenge,” Cho says, “and to make stimulating and thought-provoking conversations happen on our campus.”

A set and costume designer for theater, opera, dance and other special productions, Cho recently completed a high-profile set and costume design project for the Shanghai Disney Resort. Other recent and past projects include The Marriage of Figaro for Washington National Opera; The Body of the World at American Repertory Theater; The Thieving Magpie for the Glimmerglass Festival; Black Odyssey at Denver Center Theater; Emotional Creature by Eve Ensler at The Linney Theatre in New York, Berkeley Repertory Theatre and The Market Theatre, Johannesburg; The Magic Flute at the Canadian Opera Company; The Good Person of Szechuan at the Landestheater Linz, in Linz, Austria; Awaking for the Singapore Theatre Festival; Yellow Face for the Mark Taper Forum and The Public Theater; System Wonderland and The Piano Teacher at South Coast Repertory; Citizen 13559 at the Kennedy Center; The Golden Mickeys for Disney Creative Entertainment/Hong Kong; and Le nozze di Figaro at the Chicago Opera Theater.

TFT Alumnae Helping to Fight Homelessness

This year a group of friends and colleagues wanted to come together and harness the influence and energy of our informal UCLA alumni network of Women to raise money and collect holiday donations for the Downtown Women's Center –– the only organization in Los Angeles exclusively dedicated to addressing the needs of women overcoming poverty and homelessness in Skid Row.

On Monday 12/5, Jesse Maiman's (MFA '13) script BEING CHRISTIAN placed 10th in the Tracking Board's annual Hit List with a very exciting 55 votes. The Hit List describes itself thusly:

"For the seventh year in a row we are proud to present Hollywood’s picks for the best specs scripts of the year – The Hit List! With almost 400 specs from more than 450 writers eligible for this years list, it was once again one of the largest creative pools to select from, a task our 500 film executives did not take lightly as they cast more than 2,600 votes for who they deemed the best of 2016!"

A busy, high-profile independent film producer who makes up to eight films a year and has several upcoming projects in TV is seeking an executive assistant. The position would be both personal and business related, but is primarily to run the desk of the two main executives. Ability to handle heavy scheduling, phones and travel (both private and commercial), alongside heavy email, reading and general duties is required. The executive assistant also supports the office staff and maintains the office along with interns and a part time second assistant.
