Sketch to Screen 2017
Costume Design Panel and Celebration
TOMORROW! February 25th, 2017

Presented by Swarovski, Dean Teri Schwartz and UCLA TFT’s David C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design, the seventh annual Sketch to Screen Costume Design Panel and Celebration will take place on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 at UCLA’s Schoenberg Hall.

On the eve of the Academy Awards each year, Deborah Nadoolman Landis, Chair and Founding Director of the Copley Center, welcomes a stellar group of international costume designers to the UCLA TFT campus to discuss their craft. With Professor Landis moderating, the Sketch to Screen panelists engage in a thought-provoking panel discussion about the central role costume designers play in cinematic storytelling. Audience members are given an invaluable look into some of the most successful creative minds in Hollywood.

More information on the event can be found here.

TFT Alumni Nights with The Archive Presents:
Smooth Talk - February 27th

Smooth Talk and the short film Recital, which precedes the feature, are part of the ongoing program, “TFT Alumni Nights with The Archive”.

We offer FREE admission for TFT Alumni who say, “TFT ALUMNI” at the box office at the Billy Wilder Theater.

February 27, 2017 - 7:30 pm at the  Billy Wilder Theater.

Recital  (1978, 20 min.)

Dir. Stephanie Beroes.  Distributor: LUX. Cinematographer: S. Beroes, Janis Lipzin, Pamela Mosher, Keehn Thompson. With: Button Quinn, Pamela Mosher, Sharon Wood, Wendy Olsen, Babeth Van Loo.

Smooth Talk  (1985)

Fifteen year-old Connie (a nubile Laura Dern) and her friends use their summer break in Northern California to experiment with the trappings of womanhood--eyeshadow, hairspray, and revealing clothing—as they shakily navigate this new, adult world of crushes, and confront the perils of sexual exploration. This narrative debut from Joyce Chopra (her first few works were documentaries) dives headfirst into that time when boys aren’t just mysterious bodies, but also opportunities for the heretofore unknown mobility represented by that ultimate symbol of American freedom (and danger): his car. With hints of  Lolita and the decade’s earlier  Fast Times at Ridgemont High, this under-appreciated coming-of-age story is a sobering yet profound entry from the John Hughes era as only a woman could materialize.

35mm, color, 92 min.  Dir. Joyce Chopra.  Production: Goldcrest Films International; Nepenthe Productions. Distribution: Paramount Pictures [Swank]. Producer: Martin Rosen. Based on the short story by Joyce Carol Oates. Screenwriter: Tom Cole. Cinematographer: James Glennon. Production Design: David Wasco. Editor: Patrick Dodd. Composer: Bill Payne; Russ Kunkel; George Massenburg. With: Laura Dern, Mary Kay Place, Elizabeth Berridge, Levon Helm, Treat Williams.

Thelma & Louise Screening at The Wiltern
Win Tickets Below

Movie Night at The Wiltern: Thelma & Louise Film Screening

Celebrate International Women's Day with a special screening of '90s femme-centric film classic Thelma & Louise. The Oscar-winning screenplay follows the titular dynamic duo (played by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis) as they cast aside their workaday grinds of waiting tables and tidying the house. Together, they rev up the engine of a '66 Thunderbird and take off on the road trip of a lifetime. Watch the two unexpected renegades ride off into the sunset once again as the Wiltern brings their adventure back to the big screen.

I have three pairs of tickets to give away to TFT Alumni for a screening of Thelma & Louise at  The Wiltern  on March 8. Email alumni@tft.ucla.edu if you'd like to claim them!
