TFT BEN East presents:
Audition Psych 101 Workshop with Michael Kostroff (The Wire)
|
|
Audition Psych 101 is a four-hour workshop for actors that deals with the mental side of the audition process. It’s mostly a lecture/conversation, focusing exclusively on the way we think about this weird show-business ritual, and how we can approach it better.
During the session, we deconstruct the ideas that make us feel scared, nervous, insecure, discouraged, and unworthy, explode some of our strange, illogical actor mythologies, and consider fresh ideas and practicable techniques for making auditions much more enjoyable and much more successful.
Here’s why it’s effective: Audition Psych 101 isn’t based on any sort of magical positive thinking, new-age philosophy, or spiritual beliefs. The ideas all come from solid, provable realities, professional experiences, and good old-fashioned logic. It’s the stuff you know in your gut, brought back into focus.
The atmosphere is casual and encouraging and there’s typically a lot of laughing.
WHEN:Sunday, March 6, 2016 from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM (EST)
WHERE: 244 W. 54th St. - 12th Floor New York, NY 10019
From now until Sunday, February 14th tickets are specially priced at $10
February 15th to March 5th tickets are $13
Tickets are $15 at the door.

Alumni Nights with The Archive:
Seijun Suzuki Double Feature
Saturday, February 13th
|
|
UCLA Film & Television Archive; the Freer and Sackler Galleries, Smithsonian Institution; Japan Foundation; and UCLA Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies present as part of Action, Anarchy and Audacity: A Seijun Suzuki Retrospective
Tattooed Life (Japan, 1965) and Carmen from Kawachi (Japan, 1965)
February 13, 2016
This double feature is part of the ongoing program, “TFT Alumni Nights with the Archive.”
Free admission to both films for TFT Alumni who say, “TFT ALUMNI” at the Billy Wilder Theater box office.
Saturday, Feb 13 @ 7:30 p.m. Tattooed Life (Japan, 1965)
Set in the 1930s, Tattooed Life (1965) is the story of two brothers: Kenji, an art student, and Tetsu, who is working as a yakuza to help pay for Kenji’s tuition. When a hit job goes horribly wrong, the brothers flee. They end up finding work in a mine—and falling in love with the owner’s wife and daughter. But will Tetsu’s gang tattoos reveal the brothers’ secret past? The first film to earn director Seijun Suzuki a warning about “going too far” from his Nikkatsu bosses, Tattooed Life contains one of his most iconic and audacious violations of film form: a final fight scene in which the floor suddenly and illogically disappears, and the action is filmed from below the actors’ feet.
35mm, color, in Japanese with English subtitles, 87 min. Production: Nikkatsu. Producer: Masayuki Takagi. Director: Seijun Suzuki. Screenwriter: Kei Hattori, Kinya Naoi. Cinematographer: Kuratarô Takamura. Production Design: Takeo Kimura. Editor: Akira Suzuki. Music: Masayoshi Ikeda. With: Hideki Takahashi, Kotobuki Hananomoto, Akira Yomauchi, Hiroko Ito, Masako Izumi.

Carmen from Kawachi (Japan, 1965)
A 1960s riff on the opera Carmen (including a rock version of its famous aria “Habanero”), this picaresque tale sends its heroine from the countryside to Osaka and Tokyo in search of success as a singer. Her journey is fraught with exploitation and abuse at the hands of nefarious men—until Carmen seeks revenge. Mixing comedy, biting social commentary and director Seijun Suzuki’s customarily outrageous stylistic flourishes, this fast-paced gem is an overlooked classic from his creative late period at Nikkatsu Studios.
35mm, color, in Japanese with English subtitles, 89 min. Production: Nikkatsu. Producer: Shizuo Sakagami. Director: Seijun Suzuki. Based on a novel by Toko Kon. Screenwriter: Katsumi Miki. Cinematographer: Shigeyoshi Mine. Production Design: Takeo Kimura. Editor: Akira Suzuki. Music: Taichiro Kosugi. With: Yumiko Nogawa, Ruriko Ito, Chikako Miyagi, Michio Hino, Shoichi Kuwayama.

Nationwide Screenwriting Competition - DuSable Productions
|
HOLLYWOOD FILM COMPANY SEEKS WRITERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS FOR FILM ADAPTATION
LOS ANGELES, CA || January 28, 2016 -- DuSable Productions, an independent film company, has announced today it will begin accepting applications for its screenwriting competition, seeking emerging writers from diverse backgrounds; applications will be accepted until March 25th through WithoutABox. The winning writer will be commissioned to develop a screenplay adaptation of the non-fiction book “The DuSable Panthers: The Greatest, Blackest, Saddest Team from the Meanest Street in Chicago” by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ira Berkow.
The film, set in 1950’s Chicago (against the Civil Rights Movement and pending Brown vs Board of Education decision), tells the story of The DuSable Panthers: the nation's first black basketball team with a black coach to compete in the championship game of a state tournament against a predominantly-white team. Referred to as “The Wonder Five,” their spectacular skill and immense poise carried them through the season and into the record books, forever changing the game of basketball.
The competition, launched in response to the findings of the most recent Hollywood Writers Report (commissioned by the Writers Guild of America, West and released in 2014), actively seeks those who historically have a harder time getting their foot in the door in Hollywood. With minorities accounting for less than 5% of all employed film writers (while women account for less than 15%), “we want to do whatever we can to help close that gap and this story inherently gives voice to the underdog,” say producers Shana Landsburg, Suzanne McCafferty, Sovonto Green, and Emery King.
The competition is open to all non-union writers, age 18 and older who meet the diversity criteria. All applications must be submitted through the online portal, Without A Box, and will require a resume, a writing sample, and a brief explanation of how their background has impacted them as a writer.
For details on eligibility and prizes, as well as more information about The DuSable Panthers, please visit www.dusableproductions.com. DuSable Productions is an independent film company that seeks to tell diverse stories about the unsung heroes of history - while granting opportunities to the unsung artists of today. The company is comprised of: Shana Landsburg, Suzanne McCafferty, Sovonto Green, and Emery King.
