Written by fellow UCLA alumnus Randall Jahnson, and starring Jon Cryer, Daniel Roebuck and Flea, Penelope Spheeris’ punk rock, western, road movie, comedy, action mash-up defies all conventions as it barrels across a subcultural American landscape, from big city mosh pits to wide frontier skies.

Saturday, Jan 30 @ 7:30 p.m.

"UCLA Short Films and Beyond"
UCLA Film & Television Archive is pleased to partner with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for this special presentation of short films directed by Penelope Spheeris while she was studying film at UCLA—and a later short documentary portrait of her mother , No Use Walkin’ When You Can Stroll (1998).  Restored by the Academy Film Archive, Spheeris’ shorts reveal a filmmaker confidently, gleefully subverting cinematic rules in search of a visual language to match the rebellious, anarchic spirit of her subjects.

In Person:  Penelope Sheeris; Mark Toscano—Academy Film Archive.

Congratulations to Brynach Day  (MFA '14), who has been awarded a BFI Horizon's Net.Work grant for his feature screenplay Low Tide. As part of the grant, he's being mentored by British writer/director Duane Hopkins (Better Things, Bypass). The screenplay for Low Tide has also been shortlisted for the Torino Film Lab.
