TFT Alumni Nights with The Archive Presents:
Desert Hearts - February 4th

Desert Hearts and Donna Deitch's short films that will precede the feature are part of the ongoing program, “TFT Alumni Nights with The Archive”.

Free admission to both films for TFT Alumni who say, “TFT ALUMNI” at the box office at the Billy Wilder Theater.

Saturday, February 4 @ 7:30 p.m.  |  DESERT HEARTS  (1986)

Based on Jane Rule’s novel Desert of the Heart (1964), Donna Deitch’s narrative feature debut centers on a burgeoning lesbian romance between libertine casino worker Cay Rivvers (Patricia Charbonneau) and repressed university professor Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) in Reno, Nevada in the late 1950s, a climate wherein being queer was...complicated. Landmark in its positive portrayal of sapphic romance and celebrated for its passionate, sensual bedroom scenes that nearly fog the camera’s lens, Deitch’s vision for Cay and Vivian’s nuanced onscreen relationship explores the tension inherent in a sheltered woman accepting her newfound sexual self.

Desert Hearts has been digitally restored by The Criterion Collection/Janus Films and UCLA Film & Television Archive in conjunction with Outfest UCLA Legacy Project and Sundance Institute.

DCP, color, sound, 96 min. Dir. Donna Deitch. Production: Desert Hearts Productions. Distribution: Criterion. Producer: Donna Deitch. Based on the novel by Jane Rule. Screenwriter: Natalie Cooper. Cinematographer: Robert Elswit. Production Design: Jeannine Oppewall. Editor: Robert Estrin. With: Helen Shaver, Patricia Charbonneau, Audra Lindley, Andra Akers, Gwen Welles.

An Evening with Lewis Teague
CAP and LACO Partner to Welcome NYC's SITI Company for New Production of
Lost In the Stars at UCLA
CAP UCLA, in partnership with LACO, welcomes back NYC’s SITI Company with an all-new production of Kurt Weill’s  Lost in the Stars  directed by Anne Bogart with music direction by Jeffrey Kahane. For his final Broadway score, Weill gave passionate voice to this powerful, uncompromising social indictment of apartheid South Africa. He and his librettist Maxwell Anderson adapted Alan Paton’s great novel  Cry, the Beloved Country  for the Broadway stage in 1949.  The work, which was widely acknowledged as one of the most important works of that season and a landmark in the history of American musical theater, ran for more than 300 performances. However, when the producers learned that for the planned national tour the black cast members were denied the right to stay in the same hotels as the white cast members, the national tour was cancelled, and as a result only a few places in America have ever had the opportunity to see and hear a live performance of the work. This all-new production in the directorial hands of Anne Bogart and Jeffrey Kahane is a bold and rare chance to revisit Weill’s final score.

Head of Graduate Acting and SITI Company member J.Ed Araiza is Dramaturg for this production.  Lost in the Stars features  Zuri Adele (MFA '15). The Los Angeles Times has a recent article on the upcoming production.

Lost in the Stars has two performances, January 27th and 28th. TFT alumni can receive discounted $25 tickets with the promo code "WEILLSTARS"

Kirk Douglas Theatre
9820 Washington Blvd.
Culver City, CA 90232

American Premiere

Alder & Gibb

In preparation for a film role an actress seizes the opportunity to dig up the truth in search of authenticity. Her subject is Janet Adler, a celebrated artist who rejected the art world in favor of making work solely for her lover Margaret Gibb. Adler & Gibb tells the story of a raid—on a house, a life, an identity, a reality and a legacy.  From the real to unreal, from fake to true and from theatre to film, the play takes Tim Crouch’s (The Author) fascination with form and marries it to a compelling story of misappropriation.

A Center Theatre Group co-commission with The Royal Court Theatre.
