Interview with The Little Hours Cinematographer Quyen Tran
Moveablefeast.com has an interview with Cinematographer Quyen Tran about her work on the film The Little Hours, now playing inselect cities:

When Quyen Tran was dating Sam Riegel, a talented improviser she would eventually come to marry, she ‎spent many nights at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York watching him perform on stage and hanging out with his comedian friends. For the cinematographer, ‎this may have seemed like just an opportunity to unwind at the time, but Tran was pleased to discover how it paid unexpected dividends later.

“Having been forced to attend a lot of those [clubs] while we were dating, I think that helped me understand comedy and timing and rhythm,” Tran says now, with a laugh. “Shooting comedy, you really have to know what the comedic beats are to know how to frame it and to light it.”

Such skill is evident immediately in “The Little Hours,” Jeff Baena’s delightfully perverse tale ripped from the Decameron about the feeding frenzy that commences amongst a group of sex-starved nuns (Aubrey Plaza, Alison Brie, and Kate Micucci) when a mute farmhand (Dave Franco) stumbles into their convent. True to Mel Brooks’ approach to “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein,” the outrageous comedy works precisely because of how seriously the filmmakers set the scene, with Baena actually basing the production in rural Tuscany, laboring under similar conditions as one would in the 14th century — Tran had to create her own wicks to light interiors scenes since electricity was largely unavailable, and the intricate craft that radiates from each frame is more reminiscent of “The Sound of Music” than some smutty sex farce.

Alumna Sarah Yarkin Joins Cast of USA's Olive Forever
From Deadline.com:

Sarah Yarkin ('15) and Adam DiMarco have been cast as series regulars opposite Emily Rudd in USA Network’s  Olive Forever, a comedic crime drama pilot from  Insurgentand  The Babysitter writer Brian Duffield, AwesomenessTV and its former CEO Brian Robbins.

Written by Duffield and to be directed by Matt Shakman, Olive Forever follows the exploits of Olive (Rudd), a high school student, con artist, cat burglar and chameleon who’s mature beyond her years. She is a savvy survivor who knows she can “get away with anything.” A foster kid, Olive knows how to work the system, her tough exterior protecting a girl who’s just looking for a home.

Yarkin will play Hayley, Olive’s new best friend, a former home-schooler experiencing the terrors of public school for the first time. DiMarco will portray Tom Dern, a kind- hearted art student whom Olive takes an immediate romantic interest in.

Duffield executive produces the pilot with his producing partner Nicki Cortese of Jurassic Party; Robbins, Matt Kaplan (UCLA Anderson '04) and Brett Bouttier (UCLA '05) on behalf of AwesomenessTV; and Shakman. Universal Cable Productions is the studio.

A graduate of UCLA’s School of Theatre, Film & Television, Yarkin’s other TV credits include Transparent, The Middle and The Good Place. She also is a regular on web series Foursome. Yarkin is repped by JC Robbins Management.

TFT Alumni Nights with The Archive Presents:
John Huston's The Night of the Iguana and Reflections in a Golden Eye
Sunday, July 9th at 7PM
The Night of the Iguana and  Reflections in a Golden Eye are part of the UCLA Film and Television Archive's John Huston: A Retrospective and the ongoing program, “ TFT Alumni Nights with The Archive”, which offers free admission for TFT Alumni who say, “ TFT ALUMN I” at the box office at the Billy Wilder Theater.

July 9, 2017 - 7:00 pm

The Night of the Iguana  (1964)

Perhaps one of the best films ever made from a Tennessee Williams play, Huston’s first of two collaborations with famed Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa smashes Italian absurdism (some moments seem very Fellini-esque) up against American realism under the sweltering Puerto Vallarta sun for a languid, microscopic examination of broken humanity. Clergyman Reverend Dr. T. Lawrence Shannon (a gruff but vulnerable Richard Burton), kicked out of his congregation due to his penchant for pubescent girls, is now a low-rent tour guide in Mexico who finds himself in the crosshairs of not one, but three sirens (Deborah Kerr, Sue Lyon, and Ava Gardner), each facilitating, in one way or another, the complete undoing of Shannon’s already fragile ego.

35mm, b/w, 125 min. Production: Seven Arts Productions. Distribution: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc.  Director: John Huston. Producer: John Huston, Ray Stark. Screenwriter: John Huston, Anthony Veiller.  Based on the play by Tennessee Williams. Cinematographer: Gabriel Figueroa. Editor: Ralph Kemplen.  Music: Benjamin Frankel. Cast: Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, Sue Lyon, Skip Ward.

Reflections in a Golden Eye  (1967)

With so much of the psychosexual tension in Carson McCullers' novel rooted in its characters’ interiority, it’s little surprise the source text was notoriously deemed “unfilmable,” a challenge at which Huston consistently thumbed his nose—as well as one he would embrace—throughout his career. Following her Oscar-winning triumph in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe? (1966), Liz Taylor embodies the lascivious Leonora, the minx at the rotating center of a mean-spirited love triangle betwixt her homosexually-repressed husband Major Penderton (a bereft yet violent Marlon Brando) and Lt. Col. Langdon (Brian Keith), whom her husband also fancies. “A moody and rather magnificent tale of strange desires and bizarre fancies” (Sight & Sound), we encounter neuroses on naked display in this brooding take on woebegone masculinity and its self-destructive trajectory. Fans of the error-prone losers in Reflections will find a kindred spirit in Huston’s earlier Freud (1962).

35mm, color, 109 min. Production: Warner Bros.—Seven Arts International, Ltd. Distribution: Warner Bros.-Seven Arts. Director: John Huston. Producer: Ray Stark. Screenwriter: Gladys Hill, Chapman Mortimer. Based on the novel by Carson McCullers. Cinematographer: Aldo Tonti. Production design: Stephen Grimes. Editor: Russell Lloyd. Music: Toshiro Mayuzumi. Cast: Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Brian Keith, Julie Harris, Zorro David.
