UCLA Storytelling Institute in Cannes Launches Spring 2018

From http://newsroom.ucla.edu/stories/ucla-story:

Unique new stories will be created in the south of France when the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television/Université Côte D’Azur (UCLA TFT/UCA) Storytelling Institute in Cannes launches in Spring 2018.

Announced May 18 at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, the storytelling institute, created by UCLA TFT in partnership with the Université Côte D’Azur, the city of Cannes, the president and director of the international Cannes Film Festival and Vivendi/Canal+, is the latest in a series of high-level strategic industry partnerships and alliances conceived and spearheaded by UCLA TFT dean Teri Schwartz. This immersive, in-residence graduate-level feature film screenwriting program is designed to advance the artistry and skills of the next generation of outstanding, diverse humanistic cinematic storytellers.

Throughout the six weeks in Cannes, the institute's program will be framed by UCLA TFT’s unparalleled screenwriting curriculum, along with professional screenwriting instruction from UCLA and UCA faculty. Select UCLA and French graduate screenwriting students will complete a first draft feature film screenplay. In the final two weeks, they will have the opportunity to experience master classes with distinguished filmmakers and screenwriters, discussions, special screenings and other professionally oriented activities at the Cannes Film Festival. Vivendi/Canal+ will provide key sponsorship for the program and a “first look” opportunity for the students who participate in the program.

“This is an unparalleled opportunity for our remarkable, diverse students to experience the most distinguished festival in the world along with the chance to write a feature screenplay that comes with a ‘first look’ opportunity in a dynamic, immersive writing environment in Cannes,” said Dean Schwartz. “As we are the storytelling school, it all starts with the story, the idea, the script. This new Storytelling Institute was conceived to nurture and develop the next generation of outstanding writers, from both our students and those from France (and in the future, other parts of the world) whose works will not only delight and entertain, but enlighten, engage and inspire change for a better world. It is one of our key missions to create meaningful partnerships across the global entertainment industry that will provide a direct pipeline for great talent to be nurtured and discovered.”

UCLA TFT alumni have a long association with the Cannes Film Festival. Alumnus Francis Ford Coppola’s film “Apocalypse Now” won the festival’s Palme d’Or prize in 1979, and “Taxi Driver,” written by alumnus Paul Schrader, earned the prize in 1976 for director Martin Scorsese. This year, nine alumni and a current student are involved in eight films that are being shown, including actor Ben Stiller (“The Meyerowitz Stories”), producer Fred Roos (“The Beguiled”) and first assistant director Scott Kirby (“In the Fade”).

Created in 2015, Université Côte d’Azur is a community of universities and establishments dedicated to research and training. UCA is an internationally renowned university recognized for its innovative educational program, its high quality of research, and its anchoring in the local ecosystem.

Applications to apply for the institute will open on Saturday, July 1, 2017 and close on Sunday, October 15, 2017.

Alumna Allison Anders Interview in Salon.com

From Salon.com:

Writer-director Allison Anders had a breakout indie film in 1992 with “Gas, Food Lodging.” This flinty drama, about a mother (Brooke Adams) and her two daughters, Shade (Fairuza Balk) and Trudi (Ione Skye), grappling with love and life in New Mexico, will be screened in honor of its 25th anniversary at the launch of Philadelphia’s Lightbox Film Center (formerly the International House Film Program) on Thursday, May 18. Anders will be on hand for a Q&A to talk about her film and her career.

In addition to her seminal hit, “Gas, Food Lodging,” Anders made several terrific female-centric films over the next decade, including “Mi Vida Loca” about a girl gang in Los Angeles; “Things Behind the Sun,” a powerful drama about a haunting crime; and “Grace of My Heart,” the story of a Carole King-like singer-songwriter. Anders now works mostly in episodic TV; she recently helmed an episode of “Riverdale” and has directed episodes of “Orange Is the New Black,” “Sex in the City” and “Southland.” She also teaches film and co-produces the “Don’t Knock the Rock” film and music festival.

Anders chatted via Skype with Salon about her career and state of the industry, as well as what it meant to be a female filmmaker who rose to prominence in the heady days of American indie cinema.

Wilma Mankiller Documentary to Premiere at the 2017 LA Film Festival
May 9, Los Angeles- The documentary team of Gale Anne Hurd and Valerie Red-Horse Mohl are bringing their third and most powerful Native American narrative to the big screen.  MANKILLER examines the legacy of the formidable Wilma Mankiller, who defied all odds to become one of the most influential and successful leaders in the United States.

Although Wilma Mankiller considered herself a liberal Democrat, she was nonetheless chosen to run for Deputy Chief of the Cherokee Nation by a conservative Republican.  Together they led their Nation in a bi-partisan partnership that is sadly missing in today's political landscape.  Her leadership style and achievements are even more remarkable in retrospect, given our country's current divide over issues like the environment and health care.  With bigotry and sexism on the rise, the new feature documentary, MANKILLER, serves as both a wake-up call and a beacon of hope for the future.

A stalwart activist for women's rights, Wilma Mankiller was cited by the organizers of the January 2017 Women's March on Washington as one of the most important leaders in America's movement for equality.  As a young girl, Wilma's family was relocated from the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma to San Francisco.  Although the move was traumatic, it was in the Bay Area during the turbulent 1960s that she became involved in the fight for civil rights and joined the Alcatraz Occupation. Wilma brought this passion and organizing expertise with her when she returned to the Cherokee Nation. Although she faced rampant sexism, she served three terms as the Cherokee Nation's Principal Chief, winning 80% of the votes in her final election.  Wilma Mankiller laid the foundation for the Nation's current economic and socio-cultural status as one of America's most successful tribes.

“I was immediately drawn to Wilma's powerful story. On both a personal and political level, her legacy is more relevant now than ever”, said Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd. “This film and Wilma’s life serve as a powerful lesson in the art of the possible.  As she herself said ‘The secret of our success is that we never, never give up’.”

MANKILLER reunites the accomplished documentary team of Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead, The Terminator trilogy) as Executive Producer and Valerie Red-Horse Mohl (Naturally Native) as Director/Producer. Kristina Kiehl (The Cherokee Word for Water) and Charlie Soap, Wilma’s widower, also serve as Producers.  Felicia and Gina Olaya (Wilma’s daughters) join the production team as Co-Producers. The filmmakers’ close ties to Wilma and the Cherokee Nation allowed for unique access that includes interviews with colleagues, friends, family, celebrities and government leaders.

The world premiere screening of MANKILLER will take place as part of the LA Film Festival on Monday June 19th at the ArcLight Culver City at 6:15 pm (9500 Culver Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232). Press screenings will be available to all Festival accredited members of the press, so be sure to apply by May 16th.

The Producers of MANKILLER, as well as members of Wilma’s family, will attend the premiere. A Q&A will take place immediately following the screening.

Individual tickets will go on sale to Film Independent Members on May 16th and to the General Public on May 23rd. You can follow this link to purchase - https://tickets.lafilmfestival.com/Online/

Monday, June 19, 6:15PM, ArcLight Cinemas, Culver City - 9500 Culver Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232.  A Q&A with the filmmakers (as well as Wilma's family) immediately following the screening.
