Teshome Gabriel Memorial Award Endowment
From: www.tft.ucla.edu.

The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (UCLA TFT) is honored to announce the endowment of the Teshome Gabriel Memorial Award, made possible by a generous gift from his widow, Maaza Woldemusie and his children Mediget and Tsegaye Teshome. The Teshome Gabriel Memorial Award was established in 2010 to support graduate and doctoral candidates in Cinema and Media Studies and their research/travel in the area of emerging and diaspora cinemas, or the study of film, television and technology and their relation to social change in Africa.

Teshome H. Gabriel began teaching Cinema and Media Studies at UCLA TFT in 1974 and was closely associated with UCLA's African Studies Center. Gabriel was an internationally recognized authority on Third World and post-colonial cinema, and was a pioneering scholar and activist.

"He was a brilliant, gracious, elegant and generous man," said Teri Schwartz, dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. "Teshome was a consummate professional and a truly beloved faculty member at TFT."

Gabriel's books include Third Cinema in the Third World: The Aesthetic of Liberation and Otherness and the Media: The Ethnography of the Imagined and the Imaged. He also published numerous articles and was founding director of several journals, including Emergencies and the Ethiopian Fine Arts Journal. Gabriel's influential 1990 essay "Nomadic Aesthetic and the Black Independent Cinema" received an Opus Award from the Village Voice for "charting out a genuinely new theory of black cinema." The term "nomadic aesthetic," which Gabriel coined, has come to be widely used in critical discussions of the art, music and literature of the Third World. "The principal characteristic of Third Cinema," Gabriel wrote, "is not so much where it is made, or even who makes it, but rather, the ideology it espouses. The Third Cinema is that cinema of the Third World which stands opposed to imperialism and class oppression in all their ramifications and manifestations."

This award is one of several hundred funds that support UCLA TFT students and their training.

NYC: Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind

Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, as written and performed by the NY Neo-Futurists, is an ever-changing attempt to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes. Based on the original concept by Greg Allen and the Neo-Futurists (founded 1988, still the longest running show in Chicago). The single unifying element of these plays is that they are performed from a perspective of absolute honesty. The NY Neo-Futurists appear as themselves on stage, speaking from personal experiences. Each short play is written by a performer, honed by the ensemble, and randomly collaged with twenty-nine other plays. Each week, these plays shift as ensemble members add new plays to the existing body of work. Each night of performance, the NY Neos aim to create an unreproducable living newspaper of the comic and tragic, the political and personal, the visceral and experimental. Running for 12 years now, part comedy, part storytelling, part absurdism- a wholly original East Village landmark.

2017 National Playwrights Conference
Now Accepting Applications
About the National Playwrights Conference

Each year a community of professionals gathers in the serene setting of the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in order to support playwrights and new works for the theater. The National Playwrights Conference strives to create a supportive environment that empowers playwrights to their own process and to experience the play with a professional company.

In the years since its inception the National Playwrights Conference has developed more than 600 plays.  During the Conference, playwrights live on the grounds of the O'Neill for a full month and each engages in a week-long process of rehearsals culminating in two script-in-hand public readings.  Up to eight playwrights are selected for this intensive laboratory each summer.  Conference playwrights represent a wide range of experience from those working on a first play to Broadway veterans; directors and actors have also worked on and off Broadway, in film, and in regional theaters, and represent emerging artists and seasoned professionals.  Virtually every major American playwright has been part of the Conference, including Julia Cho, Rebecca Gilman, Regina Taylor, John Guare, Israel Horovitz, David Henry Hwang, David Lindsay-Abaire, Adam Rapp, Lanford Wilson, Wendy Wasserstein, and August Wilson.

In addition to writers selected for staged readings, the Conference serves as a retreat for several writers-in-residence working independently on special projects.  Recent summers' residents include Alfred Uhry, Lisa Loomer, and Tracy Scott Wilson, David Auburn, and Sam Hunter.  Conference participants also have access to discussions with special guests.  Past speakers have included playwrights Edward Albee, Ed Bullins, Romulus Linney and Paula Vogel as well as Eugene O'Neill biographers Arthur and Barbara Gelb.

Blazing lyrical and emotional force…The spellbinding sound of a great American artist singing the history of his culture from the stage, creating a long, beautiful song out of unfathomable suffering. -- Charles Isherwood, Variety
Ambition and art collide with the business of the blues in this red hot play filled with music that made the '20s roar. An American masterpiece, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is set in 1927 Chicago during a recording session at a white-owned studio with the legendary singer—inspired by real-life Mother of the Blues Gertrude "Ma" Rainey. Tony Award® winner Phylicia Rashad directs this groundbreaking play with a powerhouse cast led by Lillias White (Broadway’s Fela! and Once on This Island), Keith David (OWN’s Greenleaf, Broadway’s Jelly’s Last Jam), and Glynn Turman (HBO’s The Wire, Showtime’s House of Lies) all returning to the Taper from Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.

Extraordinary! Ma Rainey rides on the exultant notes of the blues! -- Newsweek
