Alumnus Kevin Doherty Puppeteers Olaf in Live ‘Frozen’ Production
From today's Daily Bruin

"Nine UCLA alumni joined the cast of “Frozen –  Live at the Hyperion,” performing as Elsa, Olaf, Hans, Kristoff or the ensemble. The live adaptation of the 2013 Disney animated film “Frozen”
currently plays three times a day at Disney California Adventure after opening in May.

Kevin Patrick Doherty stands alone in a corner backstage with his 4-foot tall snowman.

Yelling at the walls, he forms an L-shape with each of his hands and moves them in a wave-like motion. Hand stretches and vocal warmups make up Doherty’s routine before he enters the “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” stage as Olaf, Arendelle’s resident snowman.

Though Doherty was accustomed to vocal exercises by the time he graduated from UCLA’s theater program in 2014, he only began adding hand exercises to his routine when he landed his first puppeteering role. Doherty must project the character’s innocent and lovable charm whilst using his hands, feet and torso to operate a life-size snowman puppet."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences named Scott, the assistant professor of cinema and media studies at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, a 2016 Academy Film Scholar. She received a grant of $25,000 to continue her project, “Cinema’s Peculiar Institution”, which focuses on cinematic depictions of slavery, specifically in the Classical Age of Hollywood and onwards.

Alumnus Curates Woody Woodpecker Exhibit at LMU
Alumnus Tom Klein (MFA '02) has curated the Labland Art Gallery's Woody Woodpecker & The Avant-Garde exhibit at LMU. The show opened on September 22 and runs through November 20.

Woody Woodpecker & The Avant-Garde, opening Sept. 22 at Loyola Marymount University's Laband Art Gallery,  will reflect this unlikely collision of people, art forms, political beliefs and wartime efforts. Varied elements of Shamus Culhane's creative inspiration and production will be explored in the exhibition. Paintings and watercolors by artists Jules Engel, Oskar Fischinger, Losar Feiltelson, Knud Merrild, and Byron Randall, which Culhane likely saw at the American Contemporary Gallery in the 1940s, will be presented. Similarly, there will be an ongoing screening of avant-garde films by Man Ray, Maya Deren, Oskar Fischinger and Mary Ellen Bute. The exhibition will offer focused studies of several 1940s films from Walter Lantz Productions including  The Loose Nut  and the military training film  The Enemy Bacteria . Culhane's and his colleagues' working methods will be highlighted through the presentation of materials such as story boards, animation cels, model sheets, and character studies. NYC: Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind

Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, as written and performed by the NY Neo-Futurists, is an ever-changing attempt to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes. Based on the original concept by Greg Allen and the Neo-Futurists (founded 1988, still the longest running show in Chicago). The single unifying element of these plays is that they are performed from a perspective of absolute honesty. The NY Neo-Futurists appear as themselves on stage, speaking from personal experiences. Each short play is written by a performer, honed by the ensemble, and randomly collaged with twenty-nine other plays. Each week, these plays shift as ensemble members add new plays to the existing body of work. Each night of performance, the NY Neos aim to create an unreproducable living newspaper of the comic and tragic, the political and personal, the visceral and experimental. Running for 12 years now, part comedy, part storytelling, part absurdism- a wholly original East Village landmark.

2017 National Playwrights Conference
Now Accepting Applications
About the National Playwrights Conference

Each year a community of professionals gathers in the serene setting of the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in order to support playwrights and new works for the theater. The National Playwrights Conference strives to create a supportive environment that empowers playwrights to their own process and to experience the play with a professional company.

In the years since its inception the National Playwrights Conference has developed more than 600 plays.  During the Conference, playwrights live on the grounds of the O'Neill for a full month and each engages in a week-long process of rehearsals culminating in two script-in-hand public readings.  Up to eight playwrights are selected for this intensive laboratory each summer.  Conference playwrights represent a wide range of experience from those working on a first play to Broadway veterans; directors and actors have also worked on and off Broadway, in film, and in regional theaters, and represent emerging artists and seasoned professionals.  Virtually every major American playwright has been part of the Conference, including Julia Cho, Rebecca Gilman, Regina Taylor, John Guare, Israel Horovitz, David Henry Hwang, David Lindsay-Abaire, Adam Rapp, Lanford Wilson, Wendy Wasserstein, and August Wilson.

In addition to writers selected for staged readings, the Conference serves as a retreat for several writers-in-residence working independently on special projects.  Recent summers' residents include Alfred Uhry, Lisa Loomer, and Tracy Scott Wilson, David Auburn, and Sam Hunter.  Conference participants also have access to discussions with special guests.  Past speakers have included playwrights Edward Albee, Ed Bullins, Romulus Linney and Paula Vogel as well as Eugene O'Neill biographers Arthur and Barbara Gelb.

American Cinematheque Presents:
Paul Schrader Double Feature
Fri, September 30, Tonight!

Discussion between films with DOG EAT DOG director Paul Schrader (MFA '70) and writer Matthew David Wilder.

Los Angeles Premiere!

2016, RLJ Entertainment, 95 min, Dir: Paul Schrader

With two strikes against them, Mad Dog (Willem Dafoe), Troy (Nicolas Cage) and Diesel (Christopher Matthew Cook) don’t have a lot of options. So the three ex-cons are receptive when mobster Grecco The Greek (director Schrader) approaches them with a kidnapping scheme … but the potentially lucrative operation quickly spirals out of control. Adapting Edward Bunker’s seminal pulp underground classic, Schrader employs a gonzo, guerrilla approach to create this brilliantly funny, scattershot noir, which takes us to the underbelly of California with endless bloodbaths, morally corrupt characters and a sadistic sense of fun. “A thoroughly disreputable, sordid and engaging crime drama.” - Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter.

35 mm!

1976, Sony Repertory, 113 min, USA, Dir: Martin Scorsese

Director Martin Scorsese's "savage, many-headed dragon of the American New Wave" (Michael Atkinson, The Village Voice) is still as potent as ever. Cabbie Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro's seminal pistol-packing, insomniac loner) drives through the open sewer that is mid-1970s Manhattan with its pimps (Harvey Keitel), hookers (Jodie Foster), politicos (Cybill Shepherd and Albert Brooks) and other scummy creatures of the neon wilderness. With a ferocious script by Paul Schrader.

Arthur Miller’s tale of a Brooklyn longshoreman obsessed with his 17-year-old niece and his raging jealousy over her love of an immigrant will leave audiences feeling “ridiculously blessed to have been a witness to the events you just saw” ( The New York Times).

Blazing lyrical and emotional force…The spellbinding sound of a great American artist singing the history of his culture from the stage, creating a long, beautiful song out of unfathomable suffering. -- Charles Isherwood, Variety
Ambition and art collide with the business of the blues in this red hot play filled with music that made the '20s roar. An American masterpiece, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is set in 1927 Chicago during a recording session at a white-owned studio with the legendary singer—inspired by real-life Mother of the Blues Gertrude "Ma" Rainey. Tony Award® winner Phylicia Rashad directs this groundbreaking play with a powerhouse cast led by Lillias White (Broadway’s Fela! and Once on This Island), Keith David (OWN’s Greenleaf, Broadway’s Jelly’s Last Jam), and Glynn Turman (HBO’s The Wire, Showtime’s House of Lies) all returning to the Taper from Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.

Extraordinary! Ma Rainey rides on the exultant notes of the blues! -- Newsweek
