UCPS Pre-Apprenticeship Program
Did you know UCPS students can get paid to go to college, get started on a career track, participate in job shadowing and get hands-on training opportunities -- all while they're still in high school?

Rising high school seniors now have the opportunity to participate in the UCPS Pre-Apprenticeship Program , a dual training program designed to help students develop the necessary technical skills for a successful career in a variety of industries. In the program, which is offered through the UCPS Career Readiness department, students are paid for approximately 20 hours each week and will have the opportunity to take coursework in programs that include hydraulics and pneumatics, AC/DC engineering and more.

During the morning, participants will take classes at their high school. They will also take classes at South Piedmont Community College or work at Griener Bio-One, or possibly additional industry partners, during the afternoon.

If you know a rising high school senior who is interested in earning money and developing their technical skills, encourage them to apply for the UCPS Pre-Apprenticeship Program today and attend the UCPS Pre-Apprenticeship Information Session . The information session will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 at SPCC's Tyson Family Center for Technology (3509 Old Charlotte Highway, Monroe).

Student Realignment Update
At its  March 6, 2018 meeting,  the Board of Education approved a realignment plan that will go into effect beginning in the 2018-19 school year. The Board of Education adopted the recommendation of the Student Realignment Citizens Advisory Committee with several amendments.

Guiding principles for the 2018 realignment included creating a neighborhood school concept, maximizing transportation efficiency, establishing clear feeder patterns and continuity and school utilization.

A map that reflects the Board of Education's vote is posted on the UCPS Realignment 2018 webpage . Please note that student assignments for 2018-19 will not be available for several weeks. Staff is working to adjust new assignments for approximately 4,000 students based on the new plan, updating its transportation system and verifying information for new assignments.

Once the transfer of information is complete, parents who will be impacted by the new realignment plan will be notified about their new assignments and will receive additional information about grandfathering and transfer requests.

Please click here to access the UCPS Realignment 2018 webpage, which will be updated during the coming weeks as new information becomes available.
Did You Know?
The students may leave early on UCPS Early Release Days, but the learning doesn't stop in our schools!

Early release days provide UCPS teachers and instructional support staff with the much-needed time to collaborate, hone their skills and participate in professional development sessions -- all of which are critical to ensuring our teachers are effectively implementing teaching strategies and instructional practices.

This school year, our teachers have spent their early release days learning more about the importance of student-centered learning, a method of teaching that empowers students and shifts the focus of instruction from the teacher to the student.

After her March 7 professional development session, Fairview Elementary teacher Maegan Sloan said participating in these early release sessions are extremely beneficial for teachers and staff.

"A large part of teaching is collaboration and problem solving with peers. Very rarely is that something we get to do within a regular jam-packed school day," she said. "As educators, we are always striving to learn effective teaching practices and new strategies to reach all of our learners. These early release days provide the time and information for us to grow as professionals and better the education of our students."
