Our Town is the National Endowment for the Arts’ creative placemaking grants program. These grants support projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into efforts that strengthen communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes. Successful Our Town projects ultimately lay the groundwork for systemic changes that sustain the integration of arts, culture, and design into strategies for strengthening communities.
Our Town offers support for projects in two areas:
- Place-Based Projects. Through arts engagement, cultural planning, design, and/or artist/creative industry support, these projects contribute to improved quality of life in local communities. These projects require a partnership between a nonprofit organization and a local government entity, with one of the partners being a cultural organization. Matching grants range from $25,000 to $200,000, with a minimum cost share/match equal to the grant amount.
- Knowledge Building Projects. These projects build and disseminate knowledge about how to leverage arts, culture, and design as mechanisms for strengthening communities. These grants are available to arts service or design service organizations, and/or other national or regional membership, policy, or university-based organizations. These projects require a partnership that will facilitate the knowledge sharing and/or exchange. Matching grants range from $25,000 to $100,000, with a minimum cost share/match equal to the grant amount.
The Arts Endowment’s support of a project may start on July 1, 2019, or any time thereafter. A grant period of up to two years is allowed.
To encourage submission, RED will provide 75% of the required match.

If you are applying for an NSF CAREER award and you finish a complete draft by June 25 (midnight), mail it to
[email protected]
, and RED will hold a panel to review it and get you feedback by July 6.
As incentive for finishing early, RED will support your research/travel with:
- $1000 for first time submission
- $500 for resubmission if you include the reviews of your prior submission and a summary of how you HAVE already modified the proposal

, Panelists will review 5-8 CAREER proposals, get a free lunch, and $1000 in a research fund.

UIDP Webinar - May 30: NSF GOALI Program

Join the UIDP next Wednesday, May 30th from 11:00am -12:30pm, when the NSF presents a webinar about their GOALI Program and how it can be a powerful vehicle to initiate academic-industry collaboration in any field in science and engineering.
The NSF seeks to improve the nation’s capacity for economic growth and societal impact by providing powerful catalysts for industrial partnerships and collaborations with academia. GOALI is a type of research proposal at NSF that seeks to stimulate collaboration between academic research institutions and industry.

ACP & HLB Research Lunch - June 4
|
|
Research and Economic Development is hosting a lunch on June 4th starting at noon in UOB 145 focused on Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP) and Huanglongbing (HLB) research on campus.
The lunches are catered by a local Thai restaurant and include vegetarian and gluten-free options.

DARPA Proposer's Day: PREPARE Program - June 13
|
|
The Biological Technologies Office (BTO) of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is hosting a Proposers Day for the potential proposer community in support of a planned Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for the PReemptive Expression of Protective Alleles and Response Elements (PREPARE) Program.
The Proposers Day will be held on June 13, 2018 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET at the Westin Arlington Gateway hotel in Arlington, VA.
Advance registration is required.
The goals of the Proposers Day include:
1. Introducing the PREPARE program vision and goals;
2. Explaining the mechanics of a DARPA program in general and the objectives and milestones of this program in particular; and
3. Encouraging and promoting teaming arrangements among organizations that have the relevant expertise, research facilities, and capabilities for executing research and development responsive to the PREPARE program goals.

Friendly Reminder: PI's Should Not Sign Agreements for UCR Projects
|
|
All extramural awards, including unfunded agreements (e.g., MOUs, MTAs, CDAs, Data Use Agreements, etc.), issued in support of research, instruction, training, or public service are to be made in the University's corporate name, "The Regents of the University of California." Per UC policy, the responsibility for reviewing the terms and conditions of awards before they are accepted on behalf of The Regents rests on those who have been delegated the legal authority to approve, accept, and execute such awards. At UCR, this delegation is in the Research and Economic Development (RED) office.
If a sponsor provides you with an agreement for your signature, do not sign it. Instead, forward the agreement to the Sponsored Programs Administration Contract and Grant Officer for your department. Principal Investigators do not have the delegated authority to execute agreements.
There is good reason for this policy. Faculty have signed documents that obligate the entire University of California to notify a company of all inventions related to their contract. Another contract required that no one at UCR wear sandals. Another prohibited students from publishing.

Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) 2019
|
|
Agency Deadline: July 6, 2018
DURIP is designed to improve the capabilities of U.S. institutions of higher education to conduct research and to educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense, by providing funds for the acquisition of research equipment. This announcement seeks proposals to purchase instrumentation in support of research in areas of interest to the DoD, including areas of research supported by the Army Research Office (ARO), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).

Review Criteria:
The primary evaluation criteria, are:
- The impact of your proposed equipment or instrumentation on research DoD funds, or plans to fund, and / or the likelihood your proposed equipment or instrumentation will enhance current research capabilities or establish new research capabilities relevant to DoD areas of interest;
- The importance and priority to DoD missions of research your proposed equipment or instrumentation will support; and,
- The potential your proposed equipment or instrumentation offers to enhance your institution’s ability to educate future scientists and engineers through research conducted with the proposed equipment in disciplines important to DoD missions.
Notes:
- There is also a HBCU/MSI DURIP ( https://www.arl.army.mil/www/pages/8/FY%202019%20DoD%20HBCUMI%20FOA.pdf) UCR may submit any number of regular DURIPs, but just 3 HBCU/MSI ones. While both programs are similar the HBCU/MSI in that the primary goal is to enhance DOD research of the PI at the institution. However, the HBCU/MSI one places a bit extra emphasis on broader usage and usage in education programs. The internal deadline for HBCU/MSI one is June 26. All not selected for the HBCU program can be submitted to the regular program on June 6.
- The maximum award size is $1.5M. HOWEVER, it is very rare to see an award over $300K. I suggest discussing the award size and instrument with a DOD program officer before submitting.

From Bri: Several weeks back we noticed a hummingbird had made a nest on the base of one of the light bulbs strung across our patio cover. We anxiously watched and waited as the mother took care of her eggs and about two weeks ago they hatched. 10 days ago we only knew they had hatched because we watched the mother feed them, now they can barely fit in the nest together. Now we are anxiously watching and waiting to see them learn to fly (and get our patio lights back!!)
