Fetal MRI: Diagnosing and Treating in Utero

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 120,000 U.S. children are born with birth defects annually. Sophisticated diagnostic imaging such as fetal magnetic resonance imaging (or fetal MRI) can better inform parents, and in some cases can lead to fetal interventions with improved overall survival and outcome.

Fetal MRI of complicated twin pregnancy, performed by Dr. Glenn of UCSF Imaging to assess the brain of one of the twins.

UCSF neuroradiologists are internationally-recognized experts in diagnosing birth defects of the brain and spine using fetal MRI. Patients come to UCSF Imaging from all over California and the United States when an abnormality is detected by routine prenatal ultrasound. UCSF neuroradiologists and pediatric radiologists have extensive experience performing and interpreting fetal MRI, and have performed over 2,000 fetal MRI exams since 1996, the majority being of the brain, spine, and head and neck, but also including fetal body MRI.

Clinicians and researchers from UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging continue to perform, study, and advance the use of fetal MRI with the goal of improving diagnosis and treatment of fetal abnormalities.

We began spreading the word about amyloid-PET scanning for Alzheimer's disease and are participating in Imaging Dementia - Evidence for Amyloid Scanning (IDEAS), a large, national study. We are surveying referring physicians like you about your awareness of IDEAS. When you complete  this survey, we'll enter your name in a drawing for a $75 dinner at Boulettes Larder in San Francisco!
