OTC Announces UK-EKU Commercialization Partnership!
|
|
|
The OTC is excited to announce that UK has entered into a partnership with Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) where the OTC will provide intellectual property commercialization services to EKU.
This partnership was featured in an interview by Carl Nathe with President Eli Capilouto and Ian McClure on
UK at the Half
, during the radio broadcast of the UK-EKU football game last Saturday. It was also featured in a
UKnow article
by Carl Nathe and Jerry Wallace on September 11, 2017.
UK OTC worked with Tom Martin, EKU’s Executive Director for the Center for Economic Development, Technology & Entrepreneurship, to create the partnership. We thank Tom and Jerry Pogatshnik, EKU’s Associate VP for Research & Graduate Studies, for their leadership and partnership on this initiative.

3. A New
Cohort Begins the UKAccel Program
|
|
The
UKAccel
program welcomed its second cohort with a kick-off meeting at Awesome Inc last week. This new group of budding entrepreneurs includes three teams:
- CE Central - Galen Stone, Kimberly Northrip, Tina Metcalf, and Kenny Harris (all from UK Continuing Medical Education)
- TeaMe - Sebastian Hernandez and Hongyi Wan (from Chemical Engineering)
- Micro 3D - Christine Trinkle (Mechanical Engineering) and Ren Xu (Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences)
The University of Kentucky (UK) Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC), and the
Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship (VACE)
are partners in the UKAccel program, which offers a professional development and experiential learning opportunity to UK researchers interested in turning their intellectual property into a potential startup. With guidance from the OTC and VACE, qualified participants will be granted UKAccel Membership to
Awesome Inc
, a Lexington-based start-up accelerator, to take part in an immersive experience in entrepreneurship culture.
The goal is for UK researchers to discover if launching a start-up company is right for them.

UKAccel Graduate Enepret Wins 5 Across Pitch Competition
|
And the winner is...Enepret!
Chase Kempinski, co-founder of recent UKAccel graduate company Enepret, recently won the
5 Across Pitch Competition
for entrepreneurs. UKAccel partner Awesome Inc hosts the competition in its Main Street facility every other month. The format is 5 pitches, 5 minutes each, starting at 5:00pm, for a $500 cash prize, with a $5 entry fee.
According to Chase, "Enepret is a new start-up enterprise that is working to commercialize the reliable, robust, and renewable production of naturally-limited specialty oils. The technology that gives us our edge was developed in Dr. Joe Chappell’s laboratory at the University of Kentucky and is co-founded by Dr. Chappell, Dr. Mark Nielsen (a previous UK faculty member with successful entrepreneurial experience), and myself."
Chase says, "while I have helped to develop these production capabilities during graduate school in Dr. Chappell’s lab, we have been actively pursuing commercialization over the past year, which has been very educational in its own right. Opportunities to participate in programs like UK’s Entrepreneurial Bootcamp and UKAccel, an NSF I-Corps cohort, and 5 Across have been incredibly helpful in informing our thinking on critical business aspects that may not be apparent from the laboratory. Winning at 5 Across helps us realize that we are addressing the right points when discussing Enepret’s plans and position, and will help us continue flushing out the important business facets that are necessary for us to reach commercialization. A big thank you to 5 Across, Awesome Inc, and the Lexington entrepreneurial community for the chance to pitch and hear about Enepret’s big goals!"
