Denver Public Library Launches New Music Service

Volume is a new local music website that allows Denver Public Library card holders to download and stream music from local bands and musicians.  In its pilot phase, the Library plans to issue a call for submissions to the local music community three-four times per year. Any Colorado artist is eligible to submit their music; selections will be made by DPL staff and members of the Colorado music community. By 2015, the Library expects to have 200 albums on the site at any time. Volume is animated by the Library's desire to "...offer unique content that is not available in big box stores, support the local music, and connect the people of Denver with that vibrant scene."

Seattle Public Library Partners with Smashwords

As part of its ongoing Seattle Writes  initiative, the Seattle Public Library is partnering with Smashwords, a self-publishing and distribution platform to launch a competition for local writers to "package their writing for an audience." The contest will result in the selection of 3 e-books which will be added to SPL's e-book collection. Check it out!

SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION

First Library in Space

North Carolina's Durham County Library can stake a claim to being the "First Library in Space."

With a grant from Duke Energy, the Library leveraged its Makerspace resources and STEM programming so that teens could build a capsule and launch it into near space. The community tracked the flight online with onboard GPS, and teens wrote the original music for the documentary video. Find out more about this project which is a 2014 Top Innovator
